Windows Media Player Broken

Alright today I discovered my installation of windows media player was completely broke. Reason being I haven't a clue and I only just noticed this now as it's apparently a requirement for a game I want to play. Anyway I've long since replaced WMP for VLC so restoring to a previous point wont help squat.

At the moment I've tried reinstalling but I keep getting the error message. "There is a more recent version of windows media player (11.0.6002.18065) already installed on you computer."

It used to say "11.0.6002.18311" but after doing god knows what it's now what you see above.

Other things I've tried.

Unregistering and deleting wmp.dll
The "Fix" from microsoft. /kb/961047
Media Player is missing from the "Windows Features" list so I cant repair from that.

Anyhelp?

Will the game accept Windows Media Player Classic? It couldn't hurt to try it. Handy to have anyway.
