Solved new desktop

I have had my laptop since 2007 and its tired! lol so I bought my first desktop. with the laptop I turned it on read instructions and viola all done. For 3 days I have been staring at this desktop that will not do what i tell it. I have wireless on laptop barely a foot away so why wont the desktop pick up the signal?

With a brand new system I suggest calling the manufacturer.

You have to make sure that both are appearing on the same network if you want them to communicate wirelessly, which is what I assume you are trying to do here.

I usually find it's best to connect two machines using USB if I want to transfer files etc.

What does this mean? What are you trying to do?
If you are trying to share folders and files are you using Workgroup or Homegroup?

No I only meant that the laptop is able to pick up the signal for the wifi so why wont the desktop.

Like it said you should have any problems with a new desktop so I would contact the manufacturer. You can also try Brit's tutorial.

Does the desktop have a WiFi card or USB dongel? Desktops don't normally come with WiFi.

What is the full make and model number please?

Also,click on Start then Run or press Window key (next to left Ctrl key) +R and paste the following into the Run box, exactly as shown, including double quotes:

cmd /c "ipconfig /all > postme.txt & ping yahoo.com >> postme.txt & reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" >> postme.txt & notepad postme.txt & del postme.txt"

and press ENTER.

A file will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the contents here. Close the Notepad window and the file will be deleted and the Command Prompt window will also close.

Good point ztrucker. Wireless must be included in the desktop and it usually isn't but it can be added. At one point I tried an internal netgear adapter and it didn't work. At the time I had a dual boot system with XP and XP had no problems using the card so I knew that it wasn't the computer or the card. The tech was unable to help me so I ended up buying an external receiver. This was shortly after Vista came out so the drivers might not have been completely compatible but I haven't tried an internal card since.
