Help with getting vista OS back

I dug out my old desktop and decided to delete everything since it was slow and had some viruses.

The rig is an e-machine et1161-07 windows vista home premium SP1 with AMD Athlon x2 4050e processor.

I used a dvd to wipe the hard drive clean with no problems. The dvd is a Vaio windows vista recovery media for sp1, vgn-ns100e series ( for distribution only with a new Sony pc) it says as well.

When booting with the recovery dvd it brings me to the recovery tools menu but when I try to restore / install the system I get a recovery.exe - application error.

What are my cheapest options to restore this pc?

If your own installation disc does not work you have a problem. All Vista download sites have been closed. Your only free option is either Windows 10TP or a Linux distro.

I personally would go for Linux Mint Mate. Watch my little video how it looks. This video was made from my flash drive version but if you install it on the HDD it will be the same except that you cannot access drives on other PCs.

WHS is correct, all the MS free downloads have been discontinued. One of our members is making available an ISO, so you can burn your own DVD.
If you would give us your email address, and then delete it after you receive the ISO you can burn your own DVD. Just post your email addy in the thread shown below.
