laptop screen goes black

My vista laptop has been acting unusual for the past week.
Normally after it has goes to sleep, I touch any key and it wakes up.
But now when I touch a key, it wakes up, but the screen stays black. :-(
I can shine a flashlight and see that the icons are vaguely present.
There is a function key to switch the display from external to internal
or both. When I select that key, I will get a regular display for about 3 seconds.
Then I select that key again and same response.
After about 5 or so of these, the screen is normal (until next sleep).
I tried restoring to Jan 13, before the updates and it still has
the problem. I also ran chkdsk and no help.

And when I connect an external monitor, the external monitor only shows my
wallpaper, it has no icons.

Any ideas what this is?
