Reinstall Vista Help

Hi,
I had a bad hard drive that i finally had to replace, in the process i decided to reinstall Vista home premium 64bit that originally came with my machine. Install seemed to go fine, i did the updates, i got it to update to service pack 2 just as i had it before. My problem is, when im trying to install programs that i download, such as Adobe flash , u torrent, i download the exe and it saves to my downloads folder, but when i click on the icon to install it does nothing, its as if i didnt even click on it. I tried running in admin mode, and it still does nothing. I thought maybe that it was because i had a old version of IE, so i tried to update it, but i had not luck doing that either, it wont install IE 9, it starts to install but then it gives me a error and sends me to this page,, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2409098.. I do know IE 7 is built into vista, and when i check my version , it says IE7, i have no idea of how to get around it.

I use firefox browser 44.0.2.. as far as i can tell i have it set as my default browser.
When i installed firefox back on the PC , all my updates seemed to work well. Now, when i go into windows updates, i click check for updates and the thing just sits there with the green bar going back and forth, but it dont come up with anything, it will just sit there looking like its searching...

I appreciate any help in advance..

thanks

Also, when i run windows update

i think i may have solved the problem. i managed to get IE updated to version 9. once i downloaded with IE i was able to open utorrent. maybe something in firefox was preventing the files from opening?

still no luck though with the windows updates, the green bar just goes back and forth like its looking for updates

Welcome to Vista Forums zube. It sounds like you have successfully reinstalled Vista, but you are now facing the all-too-familiar problem of updating it. SP2 was released in 2009, so there have been a large number of updates for Vista since then. As you may have noticed before you reinstalled Vista, Windows Update has been running very slowly and placing heavy demands on system resources since last August. We have a lengthy thread about the issue, but unfortunately there is no known solution for it: http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/303992-windows-update-just-seems-hang-while-checking.html. I wonder how much RAM your system has? Those who are bothered the most by this issue are usually running 32-bit systems, which typically have less RAM.

hi.. i have 6GB of ram running a core I7.

well it seems i have it back to almost normal . Now today something strange happened. As i kept trying to see if windows would update, and as i said, it just sat there looking like it was searching so i closed it out. When i got ready to shut my machine down i noticed a icon on the power button (if u hit the start button and goto the right to shut down) it was a red shield that said "install updates and then power off" so i clicked it. it proceeded to download 168 updates. No idea why it did this at all since i had turned auto updates off in the windows update screen. anyway, i let it do its thing and later on i powered the machine back up. i checked the updates log and sure enough it did install a bunch of updates.

as i was surfing around i noticed a little yellow triangle in the task bar with a exclamation point in it, when i tried to click on it it did nothing, so i googled it and found this to be a common thing. however, i have no idea why i got it cause yesterday it sure wasnt there, i felt like maybe it was something from these current updates that i got but i have no idea what its linked to.

other than that, i managed to get IE9 on here and figured out i could install stuff using IE 9 to download them and install, so i believe i may have solved that problem of why certain things would not install.

I have no idea what the yellow triangle with an exclamation point could be. I'm quoting it to get the attention of other forum members.

Online installers (a.k.a. web installers, stub installers) probably need a more modern browser than IE 7 to function, but you have that now. (Even the Microsoft website does not support IE 7.) Note that IE 9 and Firefox need different versions of Flash Player (ActiveX vs. NPAPI). I would stay away from P2P programs like u torrent, but it's your PC not mine. Good luck!

it turned out to be a video hardware error, a icon came out when i rebooted and once i clicked on it , it said a problem with my video hardware cause windows to stop working correctly.

yes, fully understand about flash, i think i have that problem solved, since i mostly use firefox anyway , just that with this reinstalling deal i had to get IE working decently ..

Another odd thing once i rebooted. The windows update icon is up again in task bar, it says i have updates. again, i disabled auto updates though i have been trying to see if windows would update just by letting it search for any, it never appears to find any but the past 2 days once i have rebooted, it is saying there is updates to install..

anyway, thanks for your input..

Hi,

These updates could be left over from the previous ones. This could be because not all of them installed?

Do the same thing & look on the shutdown button & install them!
