Corrupt File Icons After Software Install - Help Please!

I am having a problem that is ealily reproduced, easily undone by a system restore but is extremely frustrating.

After I install certain applications (so far tested with Google toolbar, Save as PDF and XPS Office 2007 add-in, WMDC Update, several IE7 add-ins) the icons in my Explorer folder, and the corresponding shortcuts on my start menu become corrupted. In my explorer menu I see the generic box like when no other icon can be found and in the start menu I get a blank white square and the shortcut does not work. The file icons that are impacted are those for applications I have installed (Office 2007 applications, Adobe reader, SyncBack, etc) but not OS loaded applications like notepad or IE.

I have tried deleting and re-creating the iconcache.db file and this has done no good. I can recover the normal state by doing a system restore but the resore must be at least two before the installation of the offending program. In other words I can not simply go back to the state immediately prior to the installation but I must go back to the last good point before that.

I am running a clean install of Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron with 2 gig. I have made myself an owner of all of the files in the drive.

Your help would be appreciated
