The Long Goodbye bug...

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing Vista's complete lack in ability to move, copy and delete files in a timely fashion?

It's a well reported bug, but just wondering how many *real* Vista users see it. Basically Vista takes forever to delete large quanties of files, or even move\copy them. Aparently there is a fix on the way.

Basically when comparing Vista and XP, Vista is the tortoise and XP is the hare when it comes to most if not all things. Vista is just slower all the way around at everything. Hopefully with updates that will all improve.

My 20 or so Vista installs have all been excellent, the users have loved it and threatened to quit if they lose their new toy.

My personal experience is that Vista is as fast as XP at most things, and much faster than XP in quite a few areas as well.

Are you able to state where you find Vista to be much faster than XP so that I can check it out on my system. My experience is the opposite of yours with just about everything, as far as I can, see running slower on Vista. And this is with Vista running on better/faster hardware than my standalone XP installation or using dual boot.

Well Vista does run SLOWER than XP especially if u dont have a Fast enough Computer BUT i personally do not FEEL it is running slow because vista gives you tht "Smooth" effect when loading apps, opening windows etc etc.Vistas response time maybe slower than XP but this "Smooth" effect (hehe cudnt find another word) makes up for it IMO :)

Again it depends in which way the User sees it.I personally see it the above mentioned way whereas someone else would FEEL tht vista is running slower than XP.

BTW With the Hardware in my Sig Vista both Installs and Boots Up faster than XP :)

Using the same hardware spec that I've been using on XP, there is definetely a delay in booting up and in deleting\moving files around, in each case it's always been the same, even after about 20 odd installs using both 32 and 64. Hardware spec:

Intel Core 2 Duo 6600 2.4Ghz
Abit AW9D-MAX
2Gb OCZ 800Mhz DDR2
nVidia 8800 GTS 640mb
2 x Western Digital 400Gb 8mb Cache SATAII drives

Should be able to handle it!

@Payne747: I had this problem and it was driving me insane. Google came up with almost 1 million hits on the same problem (with no solutions).

In my case, everything worked fine, and then, all of a sudden, copy, move, rename, and delete operations started taking forever. In my case, the problem was Windows Search. I moved my index to another drive, and then later, changed the drive for a larger one. Of course, I completely forgot about the index. Every time that Vista performs a file operation, it tries to update the search index, trying over and over again to start the Windows Search service, until it finally times out. That is what takes so long.

Check your Windows Search service. If it is set to automatic start, but isn't started, that is likely your problem. Try disabling it, and then perform a copy or whatever. If it works properly, then you have found your problem. There are various resolutions all over the Web.
