Latest Vista64 Problem - Failed BIOS Flash

whyteo

Power User
Using Asus Update Program for (All) Windows I cannot flash my BIOS. It erases the old BIOS, writes the new BIOS, but fails confirmation. When I turn off my PC now will it never wake up?
I flashed the BIOS no problems with this program through XP.

I really hate Vista64

My Vista 64 Nightmare List:

4GB Flash will not work (Asks for driver which does not exist)
Music Keyboards don't have Vista 64 Drivers
Vista 64 will not shut down correctly (Shutting down screen freezes)
Vista 64 gives cannot locate link for Firefox shortcuts (But Firefox loads with page)
Vista 64 will not recognise my Creative Zen
Vista 64 will not recognise my Motorola Phone
Memory.dll error with Battlefield 2 on high settings

My Computer

Why don't you flash it with a floppy or a CD??

I don't see your mobo at the Asus site but I noticed that they have a thing called the crashfree BIOS 3 on most of them. You might want to check that feature out, it looks like what you need.

I always flash through DOS or through the EZ-Flash that ASUS Provides.
IMO Flashing within windows is dangerous in many ways (agrred that it works more of ten than not).

Try this :
Clear CMOS (and/orremove battery) and disconnect everything and keep it overnight. Then connect everything back and try again , hopefully the crashfree BIOS will kick in.

Let us know.

Thanks for the advice boss.

As you have mentioned already, the Asus board has a system called Crash Free BIOS 3, which apparently uploads a new BIOS from a USB Flash Disk.

I tried this but no go.

I cleared the CMOS using the jumpers, and took out the batteries, but no go.

I did not disconnect everything overnight, so I'll give that a shot.

Apparently you can send your BIOS chip to companies (PC BIOS reprogramming, replacement, recovery) for re-flashing, but I can't see anyway to remove that BIOS chip - It looked fairly welded onto the board.

I'll see what the overnight pulled apart option does, and ask the guys on the ASUS forums.

Thanks again

yep newer Asus boards have the BIOS chip "Soldered" onto the PCB.
If nothing works out then its RMA time :(

Try the overnight thing ,hopefully it will work.

Hi there,

I had similar problems.
I went to boot.com and created a bootable CD since I didn't have a floppy drive. It took about 4 burned coasters before I found the right combo for my ASUS mobo. I used AFUDOS.EXE with my new BIOS. (The Bootable CD told me to swith to R:/ to run my file. So when I added files to the boot image, I added AFUDOS.EXE and BIOSNAME.ROM only. It worked)

I don't know what Motorola phone you have, but I have the V3 /p (which I am replacing with the V3/T today) and I found 64 bit drivers at:

http://motorolafans.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10255&highlight=&sid=4ce5152932bbec46b1adc8025a59691c

Scroll down on that page for the 64 bit drivers.

Motorola Phone Tools runs in 32 bit mode but it does sync my phone and recharge it.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

My disastrous BIOS journey coming to an end...

Hey Asky,

It's been a while, but I am slowly recovering from my busted BIOS event. The motherboard was sent back to Komplett, they sent me a new one and everything was working great, but I noticed the PC was louder than usual. So into the BIOS, which I updated through the BIOS setup (Asus EazyFlash USB) and the CPU was overheating - 62 deg C while idling!

What I think is wrong is that I have to remove the old and put some new thermal paste between the CPU and HSF.

So thats ordered...Phew!

A (very) little knowledge is a dangerous thing ;)

Thanks for all your advice along the way.
