Upgrading to Vista Premium from XP Pro - What issues may arise?

VistaN00bGirl

As my title suggests, I’m preparing to install Vista Premium on my custom built pc (already installed XP Pro a month ago), the specs are more than adequate for this OS but I’m concerned about what possible, perhaps unforeseen issues that may arise during this upgrade. So my question is, what issues might I encounter during the upgrade, and what precautions might I take to avoid such occurrences?

Thanks in advance,
Kimmy

Hi Kimmy,

Welcome to the Forum!

I would make sure that you have drivers for Vista for all your devices ready to install before switching from XP. I would also highly recommend that you do a clean install with your upgrade version instead of through XP. XP remnants will cause all sorts of strange behavior in Vista. Here's a link for details on how to do a clean install with a upgrade version of Vista:

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I've decided to perform a fresh install of Vista, I hope to get to it over the weekend. I will post back to let you'll know how it went, hopefully it will go smooth.:)

I've done several times and it is quite easy. I've even done it the stupid way, the non-clean method, just layed it right over XP. Both worked. The stupid way started giving me trouble soon after the upgrade. Then I just whipped a clean install on it and it was very happy.
The cool part is that all your stuff is still going to be available for you to transfer over to your Vista install. Don't trash Windows.old for a while so you don't loose something that you might have forgotten about.
I'll be interested to know how much of that 1 Gig of RAM Vista uses, before you even run any non-system apps. I have a feeling that your going to be buying another Gig soon.
Other than that it should run fine on your equipment.

Hey,
Sorry for replying late :)
General usage takes around 700MB of that 1GB(Firefox + WMP +...).I am planning to upgrade to 4GB in sometime.1 gig is enuff for basic usage , for any heavy gaming 2GB is a must really.

Thanks Asky,
I have 4 Gigs and 1/3 is being used just idling, I was wondering how people would make out with 1 Gig.

NoobGirl,
You will probably love Vista once you get used to the differences in the interface.

hkancyr,

I used 512 MB of RAM for a while and ran ok with 64bit Vista Home Premium with Aero running. Of course, I bumbed it up to 1.5 GB of RAM with 256 MB shared for integrated video. I'm doing great with this setup.

On my (laptop) system, Vista was using around half of the gig of ram installed, with the Aero interface enabled, at the desktop. Upgraded to 2 gigs and now have over 1.3 gigs free. Very noticable speed improvement overall. However, should mention that this laptop runs with an Nvidia Go 7600 256 mg. (dedicated)graphics card.

I first ran the beata with 1 GB, ran OK. If you were to continue with 1GB, then use ReadyBoost on a flash drive. But if you have to buy a flash drive, then just buy more memory (sounds kind of circular).

^Well especially with the RAM Prices(DDR2) being dirt cheap now-a-days , i think buying DDR2 memory would be a better option.
I am saving up for 4GB , no 2GB for me :D

That is just what I put into my new setup. 2GB works well, but it is to cheap not to go to 4 GB. Hopefully Vista will not require more than that.;)
