HDD stuff, with a couple of questions

Wow...so I like Vista 64...but boy is it giving me a headache...

I just built a new computer, and I am pretty proud of it, except, I don't have an outside support source, since I got an OEM version of Ultimate 64. So I turn to y'all's knowledge. Here's the machine that I'm running:

Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4ghz (OC'd to 2.76ghz)
Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus Mobo
4 gig Mushkin DDR2-800 mhz RAM
EVGA 8800 GTS Superclocked 640meg
Dual 500g Seagate 7200.10 SATA drives

Everything is current as far as drivers, patches, and updates, for all hardware and software.

Problems:

BOOT: When I boot, it is unable to boot without having the Vista DVD in the drive. I saw on here that someone had a similar problem with his external drives, but unplugging internal drives on startup doesn't really work...Any ideas on how to fix this? I don't really want to put them into RAID 0, because I want to keep all my media on a seperate drive in case something goes wrong, as I don't have any external drives.

HDD: My HDDs are OEM, so they are showing about 35 gigs less than what they should, and I account this to a hidden partition that is on the drive from the former builder. Anyone know of a way to regain this space?

iPod: The infamous iPod issue...I plug it in, and Vista says its corrupt. I download the Update fix, run it, and the fix says that the patch doesn't apply to my system. Anyone else seen this??

That pretty much does it. I love the look and feel, for the most part of Vista, and I'm trying not to kill my new system before SP1 comes out...which may be a while...but its starting to get to me.

That, and the lack of Bluetooth support...

Thanks in advance

From the sounds of it, are you running an array? If so, did you install the drivers for the raid controller?

Also (and this may sound stupid) but you are talking about booting fro the HDDs after installing Vista, right??

My Computer

yeah, its set up correctly, well as correctly as it can be.

The order I have it in is 1) CD/DVD 2) HDD 3) Removable

If I take it out of boot from cd/dvd, there's a "system error. insert system disk to continue."

Try setting up your computer to boot from the HDD first, rather than the CD.

There is a workaround posted here somewhere about the ipod problem.

Do a search for btwinitialupdate and see if that fixes your BT problem.

Is your boot drive the C: drive? Is it an external drive? In the BIOS did you set up the HDD's as non-RAID? Is the SATA controller enabled? Is the RAID Controller disabled?

That 35 Gig loss is normal formatted space, not to worry.

Hi Maori,

Since you have two partitions on your boot hard drive, I think it might be that you have the recovery partition from the OEM set as the boot (Active, Primary) partition instead of the Vista partition.

Check here:
1. Open Computer Management. (Administrative Tools)
2. Click on Disk Management.
3. Look and see if the partition that Vista is installed on is set as Primary.
4. If not, then make it so.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Some things have been fixed...I did a little further diggind in my BIOS and found the solution to my HDD problem...the boot order was mixed up on my HDDs...my storage drive had been switched to first in the HDD boot order...I didn't think this would be a problem since I plugged my HDDs into 1 and 2, boot drive and storage drive, respectively. System boots fine without the disc now.

iPod has been fixed...I still fail to understand why I can't use the front USB port for my iPod...what the freak is up here...

the BT problem is still an issue...I may just forget about it for a while, until SP1 comes out...thanks for all your help!

Hi Maori,

Here is a link on the BT issue for a update download from Broadcom.
