i have an ultimate OEM since a couple of months. I like to change the SCSI U320 controller and disks to SAS Scsi (because i need more space then the Raid5 Scsi gives right now. I am changing van 73 GB to 300 gb.
So, can i reuse my OEM version to install Vista? Is it true that only the motherboard is checked by Microsoft?
Yes, you can use your OEM version to install Vista since it is still the same motherboard that the OEM used. Vista's activation checks a few hardware devices for it's activation process. I am not sure if replacing the drives and SCSI controller will cause you to have to call Microsoft for activation. If you have to, it is no big deal. Just call and tell them your situation and they'll activate Vista for you. The number to call will be with the activation instructions if it fails to automatically activate for you.
I asked this because i like (as said) to chang the capacity of my current computer.
However, it is possible that a second computer will be bought and at that time i will reverse the situation and take out the SAS drives for the newer computer.
If you leave the same motherboard in your older (this) computer, then you should have no problems with reversing it. It would just be a simple matter of reinstalling the OEM Vista to the hard drive you put in it again.
OEM versions of Vista can be tricky. Some will allow you to install them on any computer, while others will only let you install it on the original motherboard or OEM brand only.
