Acer 5920 comes with 32bit...

Hey guys

Got myself the Acer 5920 with the intel dual core processors. Every site says its 64 bit but still they installed the 32 version.

For example, 3D Studio Max has 2 versions; 32 and 64 bit.
The installer recognizes the 32 bit vista so it WONT install the 64 bit, but it does install the 32 bit version.

Loading up the 32 bit version: it doesnt, error. Wrong processor.

So now I want to install the 64 bit vista. I got a dvd with it but whenever I run setup.exe or the autorun, it gives an error saying wrong os or summit (can look the exact error up when I'm home again)

The question I already thin I know the awnser on:
My pc can run vista 64 bit, right?

Anyone else has issue's with 32/64 bit versions of software not running?

Or a solution how to install that 64 bit version? Booting didnt work, it doesnt see it as a bootable disc (I pressed F12, and when the pc boots it first checks the cd for a bootable disc)

Im getting a new vista 64 dvd btw since the version I got was from a friend if ye kno wha I mean :P (wanted to test it before buying it, honnestly)

2 more things:

Here are my specs:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7300 @ s.00GHz bus speed 800 MHz

Ram: 2 gig fast DDR2
1 gig turbomem
Nvidia GeForce 8600M GS 256 dedicated

Think these are the most important things to know...

Second thing:
First post at my forum, but it seems to be a nice forum so I'll stick around anyway to become a regular dude. Lots of stuff to learn about Vista and since this will be my standard OS for the upcoming year(s) I will need to learn as much as possible about it :)

Hi Steven,

Welcome to the forum.

The 64 bit Vista has to be installed by booting from the installation DVD and do a clean install as a Upgrade version. This tutorial will show you how. You will need to enter your 32 bit Vista's PID number for the 64 bit.

How to Do a Clean Install of Vista From a Upgrade Version

Before you install the 64 bit Vista, make sure that all of your devices have 64 bit Vista drivers for them. The 32 bit ones will not work.

Hope this helps you,
Shawn

Thank you for the quick reply, I'm at work so I just had a quick peek at the link, but it seems that this tutorial is to install vista from an update?

2 must knows to my problems:
- Vista 32 bit is installed
- The bios does not recognize my vista dvd as a bootable disk.

I will purchase vista 64 if I know it works. <-- but right now I'm not sure it works so that's why I hesitate on buying it...

cheers =)

Steven,

All retail versions of Vista can have the 64 bit version of them ordered for only $9.99 S & H from this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/1033/ordermedia/default.mspx

If you have a OEM version of vista, you will need to contact the maker of the computer (OEM) to get a copy of the 64 bit.

What type of DVD is it?

Did you make sure that the BIOS is set to boot from the DVD first, and that you pressed a key durring boot up to boot from the DVD?

Is it a Recovery DVD, Vista Installation DVD, or a bootleg copy ;) ?

merci!

The bios has been setup to first look for the dvd/cd before checking the hdd, it does read the dvd but then: nothing.

Fair enough.

My laptop has been made to run vista 64 riiiiight?

And yes I have the OEM version of vista, I will try to contact them... it was laptopdirect.co.uk who have been a great help so far gheh.

My Computer

Your Welcome Steven,

A OEM version of Vista is sometimes not really a Vista installation DVD, but actually a Recovery DVD that is nothing but a clone of the hard drive that can only be reinstalled by a clean install.

yeah well the version I tried to install isn't the OEM version. It is the vista 64 install I had from some-one else. Just trying to see if it works.

If it works: then I pay for the original (have been doing this since win 98 :P )

And if all fails I recover again with the oem disc I had with it.

(@*# -ed thing is that they include the 32 bit version while it's an 64bit machine. ***-ers. :P

My Computer

Steven,

Yeah that is messed up, but they use the 32 bit Vista because not all of the venders are supporting 64 bit Vista with drivers yet.

Your computer will support the 64 bit Vista since it has a 64 bit processor. You can read more on it here if you like.

Intel® Core™2 Duo Mobile Processor, Feature

Since the original Vista you have is a OEM version, you will probably have to try it with just the 30 day trial period. If it fails again, you might make sure that you have the latest BIOS or Chipset drivers for your motherboard.

Hope it works for you,
Shawn

Acer also gives a lot of 64 bit drivers so thats goood!

Soooooo problem solved, works as a charm.

Now let's see how I can get that turbo Memory working... Think that went trough the intel drivers I'm downloading as well riiiiiiiiiiight now!

Cheers for the help and I'll stick around. Might catch cool vista tunes and tricks here innit? :)

Gotta agree with what I saw: so far Vista is different in the beginning but when you get used to it: works as a charm.

Thaaaaaaanks once again!
