Building new PC. Any potential problems?

Hi all,

I'm building a new PC. Here's what hardware I've decided to use.

AMD 64 X2 6000+
Asus M2N32-SLI Premium
2GB (2x1GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2
Asus 768MB 8800GTX
320GB Western Digital Caviar SE16
DVD/RW LG GSA-H54LBRL

I was wondering if there will be any potential problems I may need to consider when installing Vista x64? or anything I need to add/change.

BTW, I should probably mention this will be my first time building a PC.

Firstly why the AMD X2 6000?, Intel are far ahead in the chip race ATM.

Other than that all looks fine, one thing to think about when taking the x64 plunge is can you get drivers for your old hardware? printers, scanners etc, the driver situation has improved massivly over the last 12months but if you have any hardware over 3years old there is a good chance you wont find a driver.

As you are going for 64 bit up your memory to 4 gigs minimum.
Your Video card is one of the best available for Vista 64 at the moment - even DX10 capable!

Mainly because of the price but then again this system is costing me more than I first intended to spend so, maybe I should just go whole hog and spend the extra £'s.

I don't have that much old hardware. The only piece I will be using is a Netgear wireless adapter which does have a x64 driver, albeit with some issues.

I was also wondering whether I should upgrade the RAM. I am intending to have 4GB in the PC (I was installing 2GB in the initial build to shave off a few £'s) and I was considering using 4GB (2x2GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2 instead (future proofing).

Oh I know all about it costing more than it should, my Visa card is still feeling the pain of my new rig and I still need a water cooler and another 4gig of ram to finish it off lol

Looking at the CPU comparison charts at toms hardware the 6000 doesnt seem bad for the cash.

Tonto, you are better off with a Core 2 Duo and a decent P35 Board instead of that 6000+(Unless you want SLI).
DDR2 is cheap,so if you wanna go 4GB then now is the perfect time :)
(IF you go 4GB then do conider getting 2 X 2GB instead of 4 X 1GB).

I might go for a Core 2 Duo E6850 then and the same MoBo that z3r010 has that way I can still go SLI if I want (shouldn't cost much more than what I had in mind). Anyway I've got a couple of months to decide while I save up the cash.

Thanks for your advice.

Looks great...but as of what i heard, i might be wrong, i heard that vista x64 has some common issues with SLI board and 4GB of ram at once..i'm not absolutely sure..but asky and zr3010 will lead you in the right direction...

good luck

Hi all,

I built up my PC just over a week ago now. Here are my final specs.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Asus P5N32-E SLI
4Gb (2x2Gb) CorsairTwinX XMS2
768MB Leadtek 8800GTX
500 Gb Western Digital HD
LG 18X GSA-H54LBRL DVD/RW

I just thought I'd pop in and let you know. I'd like to once again thank you for your advice and tell you it was a real confidence boost knowing there were peolple who could help if I ran into any problems.

tonto i have a 6000+ amd processor and it's fine, you should of saved your money. intels are good yes but way overpriced, whats point in paying hundreds more when you can have a perfectly capable amd dual core? that processor is top of the range within amd.

hope you pc is running fine :)

My Computer

Gotta be said i disagree with you there dude, the top end intel dual cores and the low end quad cores are far better value for money these days than the amds and ive been an AMD fan for years.
