Windows Vista freezes

Hi,
I have a problem with Windows Vista Ultimate x64. If I've installed 4 GB RAM it freezes after a few minutes. With only 2 GB RAM it really works fine.

Hope you can help me. Does anyone have the same problem?

I'm using XP Professional x64 now cause most things really work fine on XP x64. But I'd like to use Vista with 4GB RAM!

My hardware:
Asrock Alive xFire eSATA2
AMD Athlon64 X2 5000+ tray AM2 2x2,60GHz 2x512kB
4x 1024MB DDR2RAM Kingston PC667 CL5
XpertVision / Palit 512MB X1950GT Super PCIe
500GB 3,5" Samsung SpinPoint T166 HD501LJ SATA2 7200rpm
Sharkoon Silentstorm 120 SHA500-12A 500W ATX 2.0

Thanks,
Thomas

Hi Vito,

This sounds as though it could be a memory timing issue. Refering to your information from the CPUID report, check the SPD tab. This is mine, to show you what I mean. You will, of course, be using the figures from your own report. You will notice that there are 2 sets of timing here. Enter the values shown under the lower frequency into your BIOS (you will have to note these down and enter them when you enter your BIOS at the next boot). Don't forget to set the frequency as well.

i dont think his Asrock board allows for any timing adjustments......or voltage for that matter..

it appears he actually has 4 matched dimms so the timings & vdimm should be the same

to the OP
you might want to try 2x2gb rather than 4x1gb ....4 dimms puts alot of stress on the NB of your mobo....it maybe overheating in those first few miniutes
:)

Hi Vito,
I have just had a look at the manual for your board. It is possible to set the various memory parameters in the BIOS. Note that most of the information and text in this post is taken directly from the manual (link given at the end of this post). To enter your BIOS, press <F2> during the Power-On-Self-Test (POST) to enter the BIOS SETUP UTILITY, otherwise, POST will continue with its test routines. If you wish to enter the BIOS SETUP UTILITY after POST, restart the system by pressing <Ctl> + <Alt> + <Delete>, or by pressing the reset button on the system chassis. You may also restart by turning the system off and then back on. Once you have entered the BIOS, the following screen will appear.
Capture.JPG
Select the 'Advanced' tab. The following screen will appear.
Capture1.JPG
Select the 'CPU Configuration' option. The following screen will appear.
Capture2.JPG
On this screen, the items that we are interested in are towards the lower half of the screen, from 'Memory Clock' downwards, so you will have to use the scroll bar to see the rest of them. Refering to my previous post, copy the relevant figures over to the appropriate section. For those sections which CPUID doesn't give a value for, leave these set as 'Auto'. Also, set the 'Flexibility Option' to 'Enabled'.
Memory Clock
This item can be set by the code using [Auto]. You can set one of the standard values as listed: [200 MHz (DDRII 400)], [266 MHz (DDRII 533)], [333 MHz (DDRII 667)], and [400MHz (DDRII 800)].
Flexibility Option
The default value of this option is [Disabled]. It will allow better tolerance for memory compatibility when it is set to [Enabled].
CAS Latency
Use this item to adjust the means of memory accessing. Configuration options: [Auto], [3T], [4T], [5T], and [6T]. The default value is [Auto].
TRAS
Use this to adjust TRAS values. Configuration options: [Auto], [5CLK], [6CLK], [7CLK], [8CLK], [9CLK], [10CLK], [11CLK], [12CLK], [13CLK], [14CLK], [15CLK], [16CLK], [17CLK], and [18CLK]. The default value is [Auto].
TRP
Use this to adjust TRP values. Configuration options: [Auto], [3CLK], [4CLK], [5CLK], and [6CLK]. The default value is [Auto].
TRCD
Use this to adjust TRCD values. Configuration options: [Auto], [3CLK], [4CLK], [5CLK], and [6CLK]. The default value is [Auto].
TRRD
Use this to adjust TRRD values. Configuration options: [Auto], [2T], [3T], [4T], and [5T]. The default value is [Auto].
TRC
Use this to adjust TRC values. Configuration options: [11T] to [26T]. The default value is [Auto].
MA Timing
Use this to adjust values for MA timing. Configuration options: [Auto], [2T], [1T]. The default value is [Auto].
Bank Interleaving
Interleaving allows memory accesses to be spread out over banks on the same node, or across nodes, decreasing access contention.
When you have finished, click <F10> to save your changes and exit the BIOS utility. Alternatively, keep pressing 'ESC' until you return to the main BIOS screen as shown above. From there, select the 'Exit' tab and the following page will appear.
Capture3.JPG
The option you require is 'Save Changes and Exit', and when you select this option, it will pop-out the following message, “Save configuration changes and exit setup?” Select [OK] to save the changes and exit the BIOS SETUP UTILITY.
If that doesn't work, then you might like to consider skunksmash's suggestion of using 2 x 2GB modules to give you 4GB instead of the 4 x 1GB ones that you currently have.

hi,

i checked my ram settings with cpuid. i think they're set correctly. maybe you can have a look at it:
RAM.JPG

RAM Settings.JPG

board.JPG

i found out that i can use my graphics card and 4gb ram when i use the vista standard driver for my graphics card. if i install the driver from ati the picture gets grey lines and the picture freezes.

i'll upgrade my bios this weekend, installed is version 2.00 and on the asrock homepage the current version is 2.60. maybe this can help.

would be nice if you can have a look at my ram timings. and really really many thanks for your help!

the ram is fine.......its pc5300 667mhz running around 500mhz ..timings..you could try 5-5-5-15 maybe it will relive stress & help compatibility through the dimms

your graphics card is next..... your pci-e slot is only running @ x8 not x16 it wont affect bandwidth that much but i would like it maxed

i will have a look for a driver for you....

Hi Vito,

The settings for your RAM look absolutely fine. Nows to deal with your graphics. I have located a new driver for you - follow the link at the end of this post. As regards the other issue regarding the graphics slot, perhaps this may help. This is taken from the user manual, p18. I assume that you already know how to install an expansion card.
Dwarf

2.5 Installing a Single Graphics Card
Step 1. Install a PCI Express x16 graphics card on PCIE3 slot. Please refer to page 17 for proper procedures of installing an expansion card.
Step 2. Make sure that the PCIE Switch card is installed on PCIE2/PCIE SWITCH slot to avail of the PCI Express x16 graphics card full x16 bandwidth.

Capture.JPG
Step 3. Connect one end of the monitor cable to the PCI Express x16 graphics card on PCIE3 slot.
Step 4. Connect another end of the monitor cable to the corresponding port on your monitor.
Step 5. Connect an auxiliary power source from the power supply to the PCI Express x16 graphics card on PCIE3 slot. (Only when your graphics card provides such a power connector.)

Hi,

thanks a lot for your tips. I had many problems today. I installed my graphics card correctly (pcie switch card wasn't installed at the board). Then I downloaded your driver and installed it. After that I restarted my pc. Vista started to load but then always rebooted. I've tried to repair this with the installation cd but it couldn't be repaired. So I installed Vista completely new and loaded all updates including sp1.

With Vista SP1 and your driver (ATI 8.6) the graphics card couldn't be started from Vista cause the driver made problems. I installed the ATI 8.5 driver but the same problem as before.

After login i get a blue line at the top of the screen and the system stands still. Only can reboot then.

I made a BIOS-upgrade from version 2.00 to 2.60 but this also couldn't help. I think I'm giving up! I bought the system builder version of Vista and was really happy about the new operating system. But now (with 4gb ram) it makes me very angry! Sorry for this :-). And I bought the x64 version to use 4gb ram and not only 2.

its gotta be a motherboard problem...i still think a 2x2gb kit could help you but its hard to say for sure & you don't want to buy it & still you have the same issue

Hi Vito,

The fact that you state that XP 64-bit works on your system indicates that there is no problem with your RAM setup or your motherboard. What I would do is to roll back your graphics drivers until you are using the driver that came with Vista itself. You will need to reboot each time you roll back the driver. Once you are running with the Vista basic driver, try installing the ATI 8.6 driver again. According to the release notes, you need to install the driver in an account with administrative rights. Hopefully, it should work. I had a similar issue when I tried to install my current graphics driver, although this was NVidia and not ATI. Until I reverted back to the basic Vista driver, I was unable to install the driver correctly. If this doesn't help you, then try a different driver version, remembering the advice given above about driver installation. If you still have no luck, then you should let ATI know about your problem by following the feedback link below.

Hi Dwarf,
thanks for your answer. I'll try this and post the result. I had contact to ATI a few months ago and they told me that my power supply is not officialy supported by ATI and I should buy a new one to get support... I think my power supply is ok even if it's not certified.
Thanks a lot for your help so far!

Hi Dwarf,

I deleted the ATI driver and tried to reinstall the ATI driver. The ATI 8.6 installer loads but when UAC pops up the screen freezes again. So I'm not able to install the 8.6 driver.
I'm giving up. I think I'll install OpenSuse 11 instead of Vista and use XP x64 furthermore.
The only thing I can try is to remove 2gb ram and install the 8.6 ATI driver. But I think that adding 2gb ram after installing the new driver would cause the problem again.

But really many thanks to you for your time and help!

Vito

When you 'deleted' the driver I assume you mean you uninstalled it, correct?

I recommend that you download Guru3D - Driver Sweeper and install it, then reboot into safe mode and run it, to *really* clean out your driver files, and then reboot back into normal mode and install the latest ATI drivers.

Hi Vito,

When installing drivers, it is always best to install them using an account with administrative privileges. If you are trying to install it under your normal standard account then, even though you provide administrative credentials when prompted, it might not install correctly. To overcome this, logon using the account that you created when installing Vista and see if that helps. If not, try installing it under the TRUE administrator account (see tutorial for details on activating and deactivating this account). Remember to deactivate this account afterwards if you choose this method. There are also some links in this tutorial regarding the UAC. You can follow these to see if they help. Problems with driver installation usually stem from the inability of the installer to write data to the registry - this is why drivers need to be installed with administrative privileges.
