hdmi problem

Specs:

Monster Ultra 800 HDMI Cable
Viewsonic 2835M (1920x1200 max resolution)
Nvidia 8400M GT 256MB Dedicated / 1GB shared
Sony Vaio Laptop VGN-FZ290
Vista Ultimate x64

Nvidia driver (laptopvideo2go.com): 7.15.11.6369

Problem:

When using HDMI connection instead of VGA, the font quality is blurred and distorted. I tried at least 4 different brand new hdmi cables and know for sure it is not the cable NOR the laptop NOR the monitor itself. It is a setting somewhere along the line. I've tried this on 2 laptops, 2 monitors (same brand/model), all same issue.

I set resolution to 1900x1200 and tried 1900x1080 (both 32bit). No normal quality at all. VGA is fine, but I prefer hdmi for higher quality - at least once I get it fixed. I tried 59hz and 60hz, same problem still.

What could be the cause here?

Crazy part is, screen shot shows font quality font just fine. But its not at all. I also set monitor input to hdmi as well.

Have you tried messing with the setting in the Nvidia Control Panel?

I suspect he meant things like AA and the like.

Out of curiosity, what is the actual resolution of your screen? LCDs don't really like to be forced outside of that setting.

I've not played with HDMI, but I suspect there is something to click somewhere to enable that or to clean it up. Have you checked your monitor settings? It may be hardware, rather than software.

Yes I did. Thanks. Did not make it too plain, soz. I also meant the sections in the Nvidia control panel dealing with HDMI connections..

What do you mean by AA settings? What manual are you referring to? The monitor came with a quick start guide with no page numbers and about 2 pages per language included.

My Computer

Have you actually took the time to have a look at the Help section in the Nvidia Control Panel?

Yes, I actually did take the time out. Have you considered I might have? It seems you assume I have not. I came here posting my issue for a reason didn't I? I provided as much info as possible, haven't I?

My Computer

Ok. I have updated the driver again from laptopvideo2go.com and used the latest Vista x64 bit version.

v169.04
v169.04 VISTA 64bit | NVIDIA, "Crysis & TimeShift Demo" - nVision

The Nvidia panel now shows hdmi options and I selected 1080p, 1920x1200 resolution and 32bit.

The problem still persists. Blurry font quality. I tried 1920x1080, same problem. I chose hdmi as input
on the monitor itself. I've rebooted my pc. Turned off / on the monitor. Still persists.

It was just a suggestion amongst others. No need to bust a bloodvessel mate. Some people seem to think theres a quick fix to problems without fully investigating them themselves..not suggesting for one moment that you are one of those people.

AA settings would be anti-aliasing, which is a smoothing type thing.

As far as manual goes, I found one for your monitor (or maybe it was a variation on it) at the monitor manufacturer's website. I assumed you would have gotten one with the monitor. I guess, try the website. In any case, the monitor has a menu that is accessable through the hardware (not through any kind of software on the computer). Theoretically, you should be able to adjust those settings with your computer off. Like I said, it's purely a hardware thing.

If I were to guess (and this is just guessing, since I don't have the manual pulled up right now), to use that would go something like this:

1) Push the menu button on the monitor (probably the button furthest to the left).
2) Use the +/- buttons to get to some kind of "Input Select" option.
3) Once you've highlighted that, press the "Select" button (or maybe the "Menu" button, if there is no "Select").
4) Use the +/- buttons to get to the HDMI option.
5) Then follow on screen instructions to back out of the menu.
6) Might even be useful, at that point, to turn off the monitor and turn it back on.

Good luck. Let us know if there's anything more we can help with.

Also, just so you know, it's probably best not to seem like you're yelling at the people on here. Even for the most savvy person, sometimes the obvious solution works (you forget to try it, or it magically works the next time you try it, etc). We're only guessing what might work for you. Not trying to insult your intelligence. As you know, it's always easier to work on a computer when you're sitting in front of it, so we muse in text what we would do in action were we there.

I appreciate everyone's help here. I'm losing my mind here trying to get this working. One thing I can say is, I got my bluray player working using Cyberlink's PowerDVD Ultra, but **no sound**. Unbelievable...always something lol.

I can confirm the IMAGE quality on hdmi is fine, and actually insanely superb on blu-ray if I might add. However, font quality is unbearable. Its a resolution issue somewhere along the line and I just cannot figure it out.

I even changed sharpness on the monitor setting from default 25 to 100.

My Computer

1920x1080 seems a little overkill for a a res size
1st things 1st make sur that hide resolutions that you monitor does not support has not been unchecked if so tick it to hide them and select only the 1ns your card offers you and secondly try using 60hrz not 59

Please read my original post. Max resolution is 1920x1200 and this is a fully supported 1080p monitor. I already tried both 59 and 60 as I mentioned in my first post.

as cool chris said No need to bust a bloodvessel mate
anyways i suggested that you look for the cheack box and set it to 60
and you dont explain what exatly is blury and what is not ok you say the text is bit is but is anything els?
it may just be your font size that is the problem if its just the text i know there is a thread on how to chenge it i made the solution post

if it isnt just the text have you tryed using a DVI cable if so is it the same
DVI is 99.9% the same as HDMI or is you tv/monitor 1 of those that are lacking a DVI port....dont get it confused with AGP:p

Hello All,
I'm experiencing what I believe to be a very similar problem to Chad with my setup. I purchased this particular video card for two reasons, which are: 1) After extensive reading and lots of positive word of mouth, I decided that this is a solid, relatively inexpensive, well rounded card. It's perfect for a Home Theater PC and holds its own if I decide to play most games. 2) This one sealed the deal for me. It has on board 5.1 audio which can only be utilized through a HDMI cable. This once again, was perfect for a HTPC because it eliminates a little bit more of the unsightly wire clutter and it made for one less component (Audio Card) hogging space and creating heat inside the close quarters of my Silversone HTPC case.

So as you can see, as easy as it would be to go back to using the DVI port on my TV, I'd really love to get this issue resolved with the HDMI! I'm not sure if Chad simply didn't notice it because of the smaller screen on a laptop or, if he truly is ONLY having text problems but, in my case, it not only made text blurry, it affects the entire screen. It's not horrible but, it's far from what one would expect to see when viewing 1920x1080. The best way I know to describe the appearance is that it's like looking at the screen on your brand new cell phone while it still has the clear protective static film over it. It's quite viewable but not quite within the realm of acceptable.

I've tried adjusting every setting in the Catalyst Control Center that I can think of which may have this kind of effect. So far, the only thing I've been able to accomplish was making the screen bigger, smaller, or just plain old retarded. Also, yesterday I updated to the latest CCC and video drivers. I don't know what to do next.

ok my last bit of help on this thread (i think)
follow this link and have a read

i think that you may find this very helpful
not to say it will fix your problem however it gave me a greater understanding of your problem and vista/nvidia in whole and i hope it helps you too

:) Thanks ripbox. I'm actually running a Radeon 2600xt but I'll still be happy to check this out. As you said, it may give me some sort of direction for fixing this problem.
