Video issues while using SLI

I recently built a new computer and have been having issues while playing games. I have been getting the occasional error after my game crashes saying that my video card drivers have stopped responding but have recovered. I have the latest drivers installed for my video card and my MOBO. I have checked the videocards and they both operate fine when not using sli but once i configure it my framerate drops below what it is when i use one video card. After playing in SLI for a bit the screen will start going haywire and then the game will freeze shortly after. Video card temps normally read around 55 to 60 while playing games with everything maxed out. If anyone has any advice or has seen this issue and can offer advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Smitty,

Can you show me a screenshot of GPUZ?

Overheating, overclocking , underclocking and incorrect BIOS settings are the only things I can see causing a problem for you because your hardware is definatly good enough for games...

Do you have any BIOS setting called HPET or High precision timer? It looks very similar to a HyperThreading setting but affects the performance of Vista badly so if you have something that looks like HT ot HPET try disabling it.

Ok i disabled the HPET in the bios and will give it a try there was also another one HT spread spectrum. Not sure if that is the hyper thread you talked about. It is set to auto as of now. Should i disable that one as well?

No need - since your CPU doesn't support hyperthreading (as it has *true* multiple cores as opposed to Virtual multiple core support) the BIOS cannot use it.

You *can* set it to disabled if you want to, bu there will be no gain from it as the BIOS cannot enable something the CPU does not support.

John, This setting is different to the one your thinking about...

Smitty, Has disabling HPET made any improvement?
(the HT spread spectrum just lets the BIOS adjust the voltage and timing a little, it doesnt make a big difference having it enabled or disabled)

I didn't have much time to test it out last night but while i was playing one of my games after about an hour nothing bad happened. I would usually start to see signs by then so i think that might have been the issue. If I notice anything further i will let you know. Thanks for your help

My Computer

I've got similar problems with SLI. Sometimes Vista will recognize both video cards and run SLI. Most of the time it will not recognize that I have 2 video cards installed. I have tested each card seperately and each seem to work fine. At times Vista will not load my NVidia 175.19 drivers and will resort back to default drivers and change my screen resolution to 600x800. I have turned HPET off in the bios and no change. I have obtained the latest bios from MSI tech support. Here is my info...

MSI K9N Diamond mb
AMD 9600 Black Edition
2 x GeForce 7900 GTX set up in SLI
2 gig Corsair Dominator DDR2 800 Dual Channel ram
2 x 36 gig WD Raptor HDD in Raid 0
850 watt Power supply
ThermalTake ArmorLcs case with water cooling running to both video cards and CPU
