Video Distortion, screws up system (with picture)

Hey guys

I've had my Vista going for about 4 weeks now, and have been coming across this problem for a few weeks.

I can be playing a video - divx, mpg, VBO, anything - and all of a sudden it becomes distorted, as shown in the attatchment.

It also distorts the mouse, which I can't screen cap. It doesn't take long after this happens for the machine to freeze up; it muts be reset via reset button, because using Shutdown or Restart from Windows goes to a plain blue screen.

At first I thought it was the codecs, so I removed the K-Lite codec pack and installed a Vista 64 codec pack.

I've done a Memtest and its fine, and the video and CPU temps are all fine. It ONLY happens while playing videos, and then randomly. I can watch a 2 hour movie sometimes with no problem, other time it happens in 15 mins. Sometimes after a reset I can continue on without the issue, other times it crop up again in 5 mins.

I can play games for hours without a single problem, and I'm talking intense games like Crysis, and Age of Conan.

Does anyone have ANY idea?

I'm more concerned about what is causing the videos to do that - it really screws up the system.

The video in question is playing in the top right hand corner; the background is nothing, just a forum I was on at the time.

i see your using media player classic
is this the only player that does this?
what happens if you use windows media player

what it looks like to me is that the video codecs is bugging out for whatever reason

i know a lot of ppl don't like using windows media player or downloading codecs pack so give this one a try The KMPlayer

I use MPC because it isn't a resource hog at all, works wonderfully well.

I'll give KM a try.

I use Windows Media Player with shark007's codec pack. It's really an awesome collections of codecs that allows you to play common types of media in wmp. Including Quicktime, mkv, Real files, and others. You can find the codec pack and x64 components here: http://www.vistax64.com/sound-audio/152850-vista-codec-pack-32bit-64bit-media-player-codecs.html

btw, I'm assuming this is not the same pack you wrote about in your first post since you prefer to use the classic media player.

By any chance is your motherboard a 780i?

It's actually a 750i - The Asus P5N-D

Hey Admles,

VLC media player - Overview is another alternative for testing your video, it uses its own codec's to eliminate them from the results.

Steven
Sure, I'll give that a try :)

It actually is what I have been using - I was using the K-Lite pack, but got the error so switched over to the shark007 pack, and downloaded his MPC off his site as well

Use a video card tool to increase your video card fan to 100%. Video card could be overheating. Don't overclock your video card or computer.

Take a look at this video from youtube, does this look like your problem? (the distortion/artifacting does not occur until approx. 1 minute into the video)

YouTube - 700 series Chipset issue

If it is then you're not alone. This is a large problem facing 700 series motherboards. I just think it's more common with 780i boards than the others. Here's a 40+ page thread with many others experiencing the same problems. Although this thread is in the EVGA forums, I do not think it's limited to that brand:

Graphic card artifact or sth? (video corruption bug)

Evidently NVidia has admitted a problem at appears to be working on a fix as noted is this post:

Update:

From Nvidia's Forum, note info in bold:

NVIDIA is aware of reports of graphical corruption when playing videos with certain platform and graphics card configurations. We have been able to reproduce the issue on nForce 780i SLI and nForce 750i SLI platforms. We have released a BIOS fix for these platforms. Please contact your motherboard manufacturer for the updated BIOS.

I checked EVGA's website and they had the BIOS update (version P05). I'm gonna check it out and see what happens. For anyone else experiencing this problem, check your motherboard manufacturer website for update...
