Dell and ATI drivers

Can I use the drivers from the ATI website on my Dell Vostro, or do Dell do anything special with them requiring me to use the version from their website?

I would like to try an updated driver to see if it fixes the mouse inaccuracy problem (I know I can use the 'scheme to None' fix).

Re: Dell and ATI drivers

It is usually best to get drivers directly from the specific hardware manufacturers website rather than from the computer manufacturer or windows update. So the answer is Yes.

Thanks Gary. Thought it should be OK, but know Dell used to have a reputation for doing things their way!

All the more reason to go to the hardware manufacturer for updates IMHO. I too have a Dell.

Re: Dell and ATI drivers

Grrr, easier said than done

I followed the instructions on the Dell forums:

Install Driver Sweeper.
Remove existing ATI driver.
Run Driver Sweeper.
Install new driver - reported 'INF file not found' during installation, and sure enough when rebooted, device was not found and couldn't set resolution higher than 1400x900.
Did system restore.

Tried installing new driver without uninstalling old driver - no error messages and rebooted fine, but unable to run Catalyst Centre.

Did system restore.

I only wanted to try to fix the mouse problem! There was me naively thinking that all those sort of problems I would get with W98 would be sorted out 10 years on!

BTW, Driver Sweeper 1.5 was released yesterday - see Phyxion.net - Downloads - 1.5 - Driver Sweeper

Re: Dell and ATI drivers

Would this sort the 'INF not found' error?
