Solved Need 1680 x 1050 Resolution on GeForce 7150M

I just bought a new 22" LG Widescreen LCD that has a preferred resolution of 1680 x 1050. My integrated GeForce 7150M Graphics card for my laptop only shows support for up to 1600 x 1024 and so everything looks skewed as this is not one of the listed resolutions for my LCD.

I have already tried downloading and installing drivers(after uninstalling existing ones) from Nvidia, HP and LG and none of them seem to change this fact. I know(from Nvidia's web site) that this graphics card can handle other resolutions higher than this that are also not listed on my Display Adapters "List All Modes..." section.

I have a 64-bit vista operating system as well. This has been driving me crazy and i hope someone can help out... please. Otherwise i'll have to return the LCD and my dreams of having a big LCD monitor for my laptop will be forever lost!

Howdy armanjava,

When you try to change your display attributes is the software recognizing the model of your monitor, or is it just seeing 'generic'?

The LG drivers do not look like they take model numbers into account, but they may be meant to read them through PnP channels. It sounds like this isn't happening.

I got it to show both ways, but I had the same problem each time.

1) Generic Non-PnP Monitor on NVIDIA MCP67M
2) LG L227 on NVIDIA MCP67M

*NVIDIA MCP67M i believe is the correct model for my graphics card, Nvidia's auto-detect tool from their site confirmed this was the correct driver.

armanjava,

The names are synonymous apparently. One is for the standalone card, and the other for the planar-integrated chipset. I am guessing you have a Compaq, is that right? You might want to find out the motherboard model # and other information and post that (run system information from the administative tasks menu). Once you get the model #, you can try to get the technical specs for the video chipset, to see if indeed 1680 x 1050 is a supported resolution for your laptop. Don't lose the receipt for the LG monitor, though. You might have to shop for one that runs 1600 X 1024.

I am afraid I can't help you more. But there are a lot of smarter guys than me around in this site, so keep the faith.

Check your BIOS version, and make sure *all* hardware drivers are up to date....not just the video card....

Well, you see, this is the problem. Believe it or not, NVidia doesn't actually MAKE video cards. So, just saying what chipset is involved doesn't necessarily answer all the relevant questions.

They do make motherboards, but just knowing who sold your computer doesn't tell us whose motherboard was used to make the machine. Check here to see how to access your http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/113458-system-information.html . Look at the "System Model" this is usually the motherboard ID. Or take a picture and upload the whole thing.

Cheers.

Do you mean hardware? What you'vegot is pretty alright.

If you meant software, you need to go to each publisher's site to determine that. But software has gotten pretty good about nagging, I mean reminding, you when an update is available.

Let me see what I can find about this notebook, back soon.

Did you install the correct monitor.inf file? This will allow your video card to set 16x10.

armanjava,

There is a new BOS available for your system:

Be careful with the BIOS update, follow instructions closely.

When you tried the lower resolution, what did your screen look like? Was it legible or all broken up? If the monitor is showing up correctly (the correct monitor.inf loaded, as John remarked) then the driver should not be giving you options for resolution that are incompatible with your monitor.

SCSIraidGURU,

How do i get the correct monitor.inf file? I haven't heard of a file with that name before.

Hogtowner,

Thanks for the research. I'll check the hp website...i'm pretty sure i'm up-to-date though. I have the resolution set at 1600 x 1024 which is okay, but still a little 'off' which is causing some eye strain... if i don't find a solution by the end of this week, i'll prob return this

When your monitor shows up as in 2) above, The default inf for that monitor is being used by the video drivers. Did your monitor come with a CD? Probably not.
Here is the install guide that probably came in the box with the monitor, look carefully, it looks like it is referenced to XP.

One other thought. When you connect to the LG monitor, have you disabled the screen on the laptop? Your video card may not support two separate monitors, but rather one monitor and it's "echo". If that is the case the echo is the same resolution as the "original". Your video control panel should allow you to disable the laptop screen after connecting the LG monitor, and then configure the LG correctly.

Hogtowner,

It did come with a CD and i used that inf file. My video card does allow multiple monitors and they are setup to be configured independently allowing me to have different resolutions for each.

I fixed it!!

I realized that the display adapter that came with my laptop does not support 1680 x 1050 so I went to Nvidia's nv_disp.inf file which i belive was downloaded and extracted when i tried troubleshooting earlier by trying to install (unsuccessfully) the geforce 7150 driver. (i have a geforece 7150m). It wouldn't let me and I was forced to use the one found on HP's website that was specific to mine (which was a crappy file).

So, i found the nv_disp.inf(extracted to c:\NVIDIA\WinVista64\175.19\English) file which belonged to the geforece 7150 and tried re-installing the display adapter's driver using that file. It gave me a 'are you sure you want to do this since we think it's uncompatible' warning, but sure enough, after I installed it, I had the option to pic 1680 x 1050 and my monitor is looking great!

Thanks everyone for all the help and the attempts!

Regards,
Arman

Alright, way to go Arman. Thanks for posting your work-around, you could save someone else the headache you had! I take it you got these files from NVidia?

I'd have to say, with that warning you got, that there may be settings available to you now that could harm your adapter. (Why else would they make two drivers for such similar cards?) But the fact that your monitor works now most likely means that the 1680 x 1050 setting is not one of them.

Cheers, and way to hang in there!

Pretty sure that if you want to get your LG to show the right resolution you're going to have to set your drivers to output to that monitor only... and of course, change it back to the laptops panel when traveling.

I forget exactly the steps you need to take, but in the driver control panel, under 'set up multiple displays' select 1 monitor, then select the LG, then select it again for the one you want Windows to use.

Last time I did this was on XP, so if I'm a little fuzzy on the details please forgive me, but that should be about right.

***edit***

I see you fixed it, never mind.
