9 Series card power connectors

Which new nvidia gfx cards use only one 6pin pcie connector? I can only find 9600 cards for my bro's pc, He's on a tight budget & doesnt want to get another psu if he can help it. Also doesnt want to go ati because he may want to sli in the future.

Do any 9800gtx cards use only one conector, id assumed they'd be the same as the 8800gtx with two.

Re: 9 Series card power connectors

I think the 9800GT might only use 1.

Re: 9 Series card power connectors

my 9800GX2 uses a 6 and 8 pin
i do believe though that you can now get adaptors for older psu's but be sure his psu is up to the job 1st cos the 9800's need some monster power

here are you power req's for the 9800GT

Re: 9 Series card power connectors

Ah, seems it also needs two power connectors.

Re: 9 Series card power connectors

if he really wanted a 9 series card on his current PSU he could use the dedicated 6pin & a molex dongle ...which transfers 2x molex into 1x 6pin
though i don't recommend it

Re: 9 Series card power connectors

well im thinking if he maybe wants to sli in the future, he could use the molex adapter for another card.

Currently tho, im stumped on 3 possible choices

9800gt
9600gt
8800gt

the 9600 is higher in stats on everything except stream processors i think. I know 9600 is likely not going produce as much heat as the other two which is a bonus. Basically the card that can run cod4 on full while running at the lowest temp is what im asking (not including soften smoke edges)

well the lowest temp out of those 3 would probably be the 9600
but were only gonna be talking 5-10c cooler than the 8800
the benefits of the 8800 would out way the heat variance IMO

the 98GT is a pointless creation ..
the 88GT will run far past any stock 9800 spd with ease
the same amount of SPs
the only real benefit to this card (if it is one given the price of great single card solutions)...is the addition of ''Tri-SLI''..

but that's me..

Re: 9 Series card power connectors

I would get a cheap new 8800 GT 512 from newegg.com. you can get them for as low as $119.00 now. Thats a great deal, as they were 200 about 4 months ago. thats probably your best bet cuz its the same as the new 9800GT, and it's better than the 9600.

something like this, it's a great card, and free COD4 with it.

or even better this. If brand isn't of worry

Re: 9 Series card power connectors

If he is thinking about going sli in the future and his power supply is lacking then he will have to buy a new power supply in the future anyway. I would bite the bullet and buy a good power supply now and save the hassle of mucking around with adaptors.
