Hey, I have:

CPU 9450
x48 Formula Rampage
8GB DDR2 Gskill memory
VelociRaptor x1
Saphire 4870x2

When I try to load full screen games my computer craps out and reboots. When Vista Ultimate x64 loads, it says my ATI graphics controller failed, but windows can not find a solution to this problem!

This has failed with CoD4 and the benchmark program that comes with the video card. I am running catalyst 8.8 because the others did not work for me either. When I install my drivers I uninstall ATI software through windows control panel, and reboot, then install new drivers and reboot again. Does anyone know what is causing this problem? I tried running CoD4 at different resolutions, 19xx x 16xx etc. I have a 24" monitor. If you need anymore info pls ask!

Thanks
p.s. I just updated to SP1 overnight, so I'm not sure if this will help or not.

They are very powerhungry buggers them 4870X2. how's your PSU? It can also be temperature issues, as I bet it runs quite hot too.

And being a brand new card, driver issues are more likely a fact than just a probability... The price of sticking to the cutting edge...

SP1 is a basic requirement for a useful vista... Asking before having it installed is like asking for solutions to issues with roadgrip after trying a car with 3 of 4 wheels mounted. :)

Sorry I should have included that, I have a 900w psu so I don't think that is the issue. I was JUST able to get SP1 installed (i'm doing it remotely from work so its a bit hard to see what's going on haha). It took about 4 attempts to have a successful sp1 install, the computer was rebooting (which is odd, its usually very stable if i'm not trying to load full screen games). I am updating warhammer online atm but after this is complete I will try to load CoD4 and see if it reboots on me.

4 reboots are perfectly normal when installing SP1. :)

Use a driver cleaner to remove old drivers from ATI and Nvidia. Install the new drivers. 48070x2 uses 270W. Do you have a PCIe x16 rev2 slot?

Driver Cleaner.. lol

what PSU do you have. i see you said 900w, but what brand?
Also what drivers are you using. 8.7 or 8.8
I've been hearing about some horror stories with the 8.8 since it was just released. You shold be on 8.7 i believe. Also is it getting to hot and crashing, causing a restart. What speed is the fan % set to. I'd turn that up anyways on principle.

I'd go home, make sure SP1 was successfully installed. and any hotfixes also. then restart ur computer, and try cleaning, then RE installing the latest driver for your card.

Thx for updates, my psu is ABS Tagan BS series (sli ready -- nicest high quality modular psu i've ever owned). I'm not sure about the "rev2" slot but the motherboard x48 formula rampage is seems to be an amazing board so far so I'd assume it has it. SP1 did install correctly but I'm still having problems. I also have a intel ICH9 compatibility problem! I think I will be able to find drivers for the SMBUS but we shall see. I will look for driver cleaner now thanks

Does your power supply have two 6 pin PCI Express power connectors only, or a 6 pin PCI Express power connector and an 8 pin PCI Express power connector.

If your powersupply only has two 6 pin PCI Express power connectors on it, you need to use a 6 pin to 8 pin PCI Express power adapter to ensure the card is getting the power it needs. I had to use a 6 pin PCI Express to 8 pin PCI Express power adapter recently on my 3870X2 as I suspected it was starting to have a few power issues, and using the adapter I mentioned is what solved it.

The adapter I mention, can be ordered from Newegg, or from PC Power and Cooling if your videocard didn't come with one.

ah my psu had the needed power connectors. 2 6pin, 2 8 pin, + additional 4's and 8's. So I am still having issues, I have uninstalled all ati software / registry values / drivers and reinstalled only the driver (no ccc, etc) and still having these darn restarts. I also have a blue screen occuring more frequently, i was doing my fantasy draft tonight and blue screened while alt-tabbing to my injury reports site.

all the vista error reports are saying is:
Problem caused by ATI graphics Driver
Windows compatibility problem found (ICH9)
Blue screen error caused by device or drive (seems to have occured since I removed CCC and just tried the driver). I already tried 8.7 and 8.8, the cd came with 8.6.

This stinks because my beta weekend for warhammer starts tomorrow and i have plans saturday! *sadface*

My Computer

I'm having the same problem. I am also running vista and I have a sapphire 4870x2. Before I purchased the rest of my system yesterday, I had a day to test the card on my old XP dual core box. It worked flawlessly. I checked DXDIAG and it looks good but so far only the drivers on the disk that came with the card work at all. When I try to launch any full screen game, the monitor goes black but still with backlight on, the mouse freezes in the center of the screen. Then about 3-5 seconds later it says "no signal". Then I hear the fan speed up briefly on the video card almost as though I have rebooted, but the video never recovers and I have to manually power off and back on. I hope this brings you some comfort. My motherboard in this system is brand new, ASUS M3A78-T with AMD 790GX chipset and south bridge SB750 and I am running a Phenom 9950 black. I found a beta bios but that did me nothing. One thing I noticed is that aero does work, as well as my card working in XP. I think we are looking at some conflict of hardware by faulty software, not faulty hardware in any particular unit, but the combination of ellements.

My Computer

This time I somehow managed to "not" reboot when trying to run futuremark vantage?! I don't know what change I made that got me this far because I've made so many. After I get the black screen in futuremark, the mouse was still moving so I hit ctrl+alt+del and got task manager and was able to kill futuremark. I pulled this from the error report. This is very interesting, however there was no suggested sollution :(

Hmm I have ran out of ideas to try. I'm thinking about putting my old setup back together in a different case and use that until I hear of a solution. Its weird because people with the same hardware (such as tomshardware) has done benchmarks with my mobo / 4870x2 setup and the games i play... and no problems! perhaps I should try starting from scratch one more time. I noticed the cards run really hot, mine was at 62c idling in vista. I read they will go beyong 100c under load and this is by ATI design and is acceptable by their standards. That was a little hard to swallow, I could boil water with my gpu lol

maybe it's the card

Check that you have the graphics card installed correctly. Check for the latest ATI drivers. What about motherboard support? The temperature of that graphics card exceeds every other.

Try setting the fan speed to 100% (it'll be noisy, but you *should* be able to rule out temperature issues).

Turns out it was a defective card. I re-installed xp on the box and got the same problems. I then tried it again on my dual core and get the same thing which is completely different hardware. I'll be sending mine back on Monday :( Oh well, it happens. I just hope nobody gives me any lip when I return it, or else I have to break their neck ;)

Next question, are you running a Creative X-Fi soundcard. Somebody posted in a thread on this forum, that he was getting crash to desktop errors, and I think some other error, until he uninstalled the software and drivers for his Creative X-Fi, pulled the card out, and enabled the onboard sound on his motherboard. Since then, he hasn't had any trouble.
