Radeon HD4850 Multidisplays and Sleep mode

I figure I might as well post it in this forum to inform those who have my card (ASUS EAH4850 512MB). Currently after posting this topic in another forum, there seems to be no solution. Here is my conclusions from the situation.

  • Sleep mode with Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit does not work with multidisplays, using the radeon HD4850 running Catalyst 8.7 or Catalyst 8.8, when returning from sleep mode. It works only on a single display and will not work even when the secondary display is disabled. Monitors will display a blank screen and the power lights will flash indicating they are in standby even after the system has been restored from sleep mode. The secondary monitor must be physically detached from the graphics card (remove the DVI, AGP, or S-Video cable) for the system to return from sleep mode.

If anyone has a different conclusion be my guest. I'm hoping for answers.

Re: Radeon HD4850 Multidisplays and Sleep mode

Update. After spending a day at work with this card, it seems sleep mode does in fact work, but only if given 5 to 10 minutes after it initially goes into sleep mode. ATI bug? Vista bug? Who knows.

Re: Radeon HD4850 Multidisplays and Sleep mode

My computer just did this for the first time tonight since I've had Dual screens in months and months. Last night I changed from 177.41 Nvidia drivers to 177.83. that could be it. I'm still going to give it a try and see how these work, as they gave me more points in 3DMark06, and games looked great. But hopefully they don't have problems. if so I'm going back down to older drivers.

I'll let ya know. you find anything out yet.

Re: Radeon HD4850 Multidisplays and Sleep mode

Well I've tested what I can, to try and figure out what the problem is but no luck. It just seems utterly random, like its not linked to any feature or any setting. This all happened when I made a switch from my BFG 7600GT to an Asus HD4850. Ever since then the sleep mode has been buggy.

I've tested to see if the following motherboard settings were the problem: wake-on PCI-E, spread spectrum, suspend mode S1 & S3. Changing either of these settings did not change the fact that at some random point my wake-up from sleep mode just fails.

I tested as follows:
1.) Load Windows Vista 32-bit after shutdown and don't log into my user account
2.) Wait at the login screen and then time 15-30 seconds before pressing the power button (assigned to sleep on press)
3.) Wait 15-30 seconds before pressing the power button again
4.) If computer woke-up, check off success on paper and repeat steps 2-3. If not, follow to step 5.
5.) Hold the power button and shut down the computer manually. Logged how many tries before it "craps out" from waking up.

Normally I'd expect the computer to wake-up no matter how many times I put it to sleep mode, but this wasn't the result I saw.

My results showed:
@ 15 second intervals it would crap out between the 1st and 3rd wake-up.
@ 30 second intervals it would also crap out between the 1st and 3rd wake-up.

So far there's absolutely no link between how long I wait before waking-up and the number of tries it takes to crap out the Sleep system. Its still totally random.

Re: Radeon HD4850 Multidisplays and Sleep mode

I'm not having the problem anymore. it happened about 3 times in about 4 days on Nvidia 177.83 Drivers. but not anymore not I'm using the 177.92

Also with 177.92 I can Oc the GFX card a good 30 or more without any problems. so not bad. sorry to hear your ASUS, ATI or whatever problem is happening. is it all 4850's or only the ASUS. if so then return it and get a Sapphire or Visiontek. ??? possibility?

Hah, thanks for replying though. I guess I should return it and see what happens, couldn't hurt.

Re: Radeon HD4850 Multidisplays and Sleep mode

well look on those thread where you said no ones posted a fix for it. if it's only happening with ASUS, then try someone else out. see if that helps.

Good Luck Sir

Re: Radeon HD4850 Multidisplays and Sleep mode

I'm having a similar problem. If anyone can help with this it would be a HUGE help.

System Info:
-ASUS P5k Deluxe WiFI AP
-Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz
-4GM DDR2 800 MHz RAM
-ASUS HD4850 VGA
-Vista Ultimate (32-bit)

I am trying to set up dual display. During POST and bootup, both monitors respond (and the same image is displayed on both). Once Vista starts, one display shuts off (goes to standby) and only one monitor displays the desktop.

I have CCC 8.10 installed. When I go into it to set up dual display, both monitors are listed, however, no matter what I try, I cannot get extended desktop to display correctly, or even any display to show on both monitors.

I previously had the HD3850 installed on Vista and used dual-display/extended desktop working without issue.

Does anyone know about this issue and how to resolve it? I am at the poiint now where I am about to return the HD4850. It has to be software related...
