Inspiron 1420 vista x64 graphics memory issue

Hello, I am the owner of Dell Inspiron 1420 with NVidia Geforce 1420 128 mb.
I've installed Vista Ultimate x64 with all the drivers automatically detect and windows functioning normally. But the only problem I am facing now is the graphics memory which is important for me to be able to play games which requires 256 mb graphics memory.

My vista uses approx. 1872 mb of shared memory which is absolutely crazy leaving me with 128 mb of graphics memory. Before, I got 256 mb of graphics memory in windows xp and i can play almost any latest games. I've also wondered, is there any way to change the graphics memory size or the shared memory size? Even i've updated my BIOS, still it wont allow me to change it... need help, Anyone???

MDruss, if I'm understanding this correctly you wan't to change your card from 128mB to 256mB in order to play games? (Correct me if I understood wrongly)

You cannot change the memory of your card, if you want more dedicated graphics memory, you will have to buy a new card, but make sure it is compatible with your motherboard and that your power supply is powerful enough (if you post the specs of that dell, we can help you find one...)

First thing to resolve whatever issue you're having is to figure out what parts you're working with? There's no such thing as an nVidia GeForce 1420; you most likely have some variant of the 8400M: GeForce 8400M - Notebook and Laptop

Find out what card you're running by dl'ing and running gpu-z: GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility

Re: Inspiron 1420 vista x64 graphics memory issue

Yes, if a game requires 256MB onboard RAM and you don't have it, the game is going to stop at the install when the installer doesn't detect the appropriate amount of vRAM; however, if this same card was used on an XP machine to play the same games, then there's something else going on.

What that is I don't know yet; we just don't have enough information? Full system specs, more importantly, accurate system specs and the games he's trying to play might give us more insight?

Re: Inspiron 1420 vista x64 graphics memory issue

Sorry about the confusion of the NVidia Geforce 1420. Actually it's Geforce 8400m gs. Well, this is my laptop specs...

Laptop: Dell Inspiron 1420
Bios: Phoenix ROM BIOS PlUS Version 1.10 A09
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5550 @ 1.83GHz (2 CPUs), 1.8GHz
Memory: 4094MB RAM
Page File: 1352MB used, 6991MB available
DirectX version: DirectX 10
Graphic: NVidia Geforce 8400M GS
Dac Type: Intergrated RAMDAC
appox. Total Memory: 1904MB

I get this information via dxdiag. Just want to ask, does turbocache allow us to change the graphics memory? i've heard it that most NVidia Graphic Card have the turbocache thing...

How Does it Work?
The revolutionary TurboCache technology utilizes the additional bandwidth of the PCI Express graphics bus to reach higher levels of graphics performance than traditional video memory solutions, delivering the performance and features you expect from NVIDIA graphics hardware. By allowing the graphics processing unit (GPU) to share the capacity and bandwidth of dedicated video memory and dynamically available system memory, TurboCache turbocharges performance and provides larger total graphics memory.
NVIDIA TurboCache

Never heard of this before. Did you get a chance to run gpu-z to find out how much RAM your card has?
