Vista x64 HDMI video issue (Nvidia 9800gt)

I have a new computer with Vista x64 on it and an Nvidia 9800gt video card. The card has dvi ports on it and my monitor has a vga and an hdmi hookup.

If i use the dvi-to-hdmi connector, graphics are much sharper but the fonts (in games, in browsers, in regular windows) are very hard on the eyes and font colors are hard to distinguish in as if they are too faint

If i use the dvi-to-vga connection, the fonts are great, but it definitely feels what im seeing is much more "dull" as far as graphics, sharpness, etc.

I am sure there must be a setting somewhere that i could find a way to make the fonts look clear and rich in color on the hdmi connection, but i cannot find it. Ive tried diff resolutions, adjusting color settings on monitor and video card, fiddling with windows cleartype font settings, etc.

Am I just imagining things? Or are there any kind of issues people have heard along this line? Thanks for any help or tips someone can reply with.

right click on the mouse and go to the Nvidia control panel. have it set up with the HDMI, and try to make sure all settings are right. you can also set the overall graphics to be set to performance, Quality. or balance. I'd use HDMI. and set it for Balance and see if that helps. not to mention any other settings in there Nvidia control panel you think would help.. try that

I have a similar problem.

Using vista x64 with an Nvidia 9800GT. I am using DMI to HDMI (going to a Toshiba Regza). I have fiddled with the Nvidia settings, but the small detail is still fuzzy. Any tips?

Check your drivers on the nvidia site: GeForce Release 178

See whether your current driver matches the new one from nvidia...

I to have a 512Mb Club 9800GT and also suffering the same issue.

I have messed all the settings and updated to the latest Nvidia drivers with no luck

When set to a HD resolution the image looks fuzzy and flat and blurs when dragging windows.. the text is tricky to read.

Yet if I set it to a standard res it looks great.. but that defeats the point of using the HDMi out to run HD Video to my screen.

I have a 32" Samsung LCD using the HDMi via a Pure AVI Belkin Divi - HDMi adaptor... £20 so not a cheap one either!

Any other thoughts would be a real help :)

Might try adjusting the default "Menu" Font size inside Windows "Advanced Appearance" for starters.:geek:

Thats a fair point although wont tht then effect the fonts on my VGA screen as well?

I think the problem is more the overall image quality that contributes to the iffy text :)

Are you guys running your monitors/TV's at their native resolutions of some other resolution?

Hi,

I have a somewhat similar issue that I would guess is plaguing a lot of folks trying to play DVD's while connected from HDMI out to HDMI in on my monitor. I have an HP M9250f CPU runing Windows Vista 64-bit, with an NVIDIA 8600GT graphics card, hooked to an HP W2207H monitor via HDMI cable. If I try to play a standard DVD with these connections using Windows Media Center, Media Player or almost any other downloaded player, one of two things have happened:
- The monitor screen goes black and nothing happens
- Most often, I get an error message related to the DVD being copy protected = it won't allow the disk to play.

Before anyone jumps to any conclusions, I have tried virtually everything to compbat this from loading the lastest NVIDIA

My Computer

Sounds like you are running into the DRM on thecopy protected posting. Are you using a store bought DVD or a home made DVD?

Hi,

I have a somewhat similar issue that I would guess is plaguing a lot of folks trying to play DVD's while connected from HDMI out to HDMI in on my monitor. I have an HP M9250f CPU running Windows Vista 64-bit, with an NVIDIA 8600GT graphics card, hooked to an HP W2207H monitor via HDMI cable. If I try to play a standard DVD with these connections using Windows Media Center, Media Player or almost any other downloaded player, one of two things have happened:
- The monitor screen goes black and nothing happens
- Most often, I get an error message related to the DVD being copy protected = it won't allow the disk to play.

Before anyone jumps to conclusions, I have tried virtually everything to resolve this issue, from loading the lastest NVIDIA & monitor drivers to adjusting almost every display setting available. I also spent over 5 hours on the phone with folks from HP, who could only offer a download of a software player that was problematical at best.

I now know there are some major issues related to Digital Rights Management (DRM) when trying to play DVD's over an HDMI-HDMI connection, even though the monitor, video card and CPU should otherwise allow it.

Once I finally changed my connection to a VGA(monitor end)-DVI cable..something none of the "experts" at HP even thought to propose...all my players worked flawlessly with no error messages. I can live with that for now, but I want to purchase a BluRay player, and if the DRM issue manifests itself (as I would expect) once I reconnect the HDMI cable to play a BluRay disk, I'm back to square one.

I hope relating my experience will help others struggling with this issue who are trying to play standard DVD's thorugh Vista's Media Center. But I'd like to know if anyone has come up with a "fix" that resolves the HDMI-HDMI connector problem. Thanks.

My Computer

I bought a Sony Bravia and Blu-ray player. I don't get DRM issues. The problem is how Microsoft implemented DRM in their OS to protect from illegal copying.

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your response. Good to know. Sure would be nice if MS would provide a fix for this particular issue.

Cheers,
Greg

The problem is how Microsoft implemented DRM in their OS to protect from illegal copying.

Or it could be that his 8600GT doesn't support HDCP (and his monitor does),

HDCP support on the GeForce 8600GT is optional as it is not natively included with the G84 architecture. In order to support HDCP the graphic card manufacturer needs to include an EEPROM which holds the HDCP codes.
Nvidia's GeForce 8600GTS and 8600GT, DirectX 10 midrange madness.

which if his is one of those that doesn't then he can't use HDMI, and why it works when connected via VGA and/or DVI.

I looked up the supporting doc for the 8600 GT. As you noted, Nvidia says the card's support of HDCP is optional. Can I obtain the EEPROM you reference from the manufacturer? If so, how? Thanks.

My Computer

No you can't. Don't think the card manufacturer's would be too impressed with customers trying to solder something like that onto the cards. If you card is one of those that doesn't have it the only way to fix it is to get a card that does support HDCP.

Thanks. It's the answer I was beginning to suspect. Probably part of the reason my "refurbished" HP M9250F was as inexpensive as it was on Buy.com. Any good places to point me to a (somewhat) reasonably priced HDCP-compliant card? I'm not a gamer. Mostly it would be to watch DVD's and HDTV on my HP w2207h monitor, which is fully HDCP capable. In any case, thanks for your helpful input. Most appreciated.
