Hi guys,:)
What should I do?
My cousin want to give it to me his xfx 9800 gx2 for only $150 coz he now have gtx 280. He used it for almost 3 months only.
I have an Asus 8800 gtx.
I heard that there are many problem of gx2 specially the temp.
I am now testing the 9800 Gx2.
So far I dont encounter any prob w/ this card (gx2). But I am more concern of the temp of the card. (thats why i need some prof advice).
BTW, I dont have any software that can monitor the temp of this GX2. My SmartDoctor dont recognize the XFX card.
What is the best software that can monitor this card?
What do you think? :confused:Should I get it or stick w/ my 8800gtx?
Thanks for the time?:)

go with the GX2!!.... the G80 88GTX though still a great performer is getting old.....& im sure the GTX gets just as hot as the GX2 will as the G80 was a hot card anyway...

the GX2 is a super card .... its up there with the GT200 range & ATIs 4870s
still to this day 2x G92 cores STOMP!!! & at that price i would bite his arm off ....lol

make sure your PSU can handle it... the minimum you will need is a good 500w - 600w PSU with at least 40A on the 12v

temp monitoring apps....

Rivatuner

GPUZ

Everest

all these apps have GPU sensors .....i personally prefer Rivatuner but driver signings will need to be disabled to run it...

Thanks skunksmash,
I just worry about the temp of the gx2. But anyway I only spend 2-3 hrs on my PC so maybe i"ll just be aware of my temperature or maybe adjust the fanspeed.
I will use Rivatuner to monitor it. Thanks

I guess im lucky i got this HOT gx2...
Thanks for the Time, appreciate it

NP. ;)

Rivatuner will also allow fan speed adjustment...

i leave mine on 27% while idle & wack it up to 100% when gaming
im not too worried about the noise as i wear headphones...
but it assures a cool card.

Ya I'd get the GX2.. as it's a good card. although some games it has some stuttering problems. and yes it's hot, but your old card is hot also...

also if those programs don't work. you can always get what I use and love.

eVGA Precision.. it's for eVGA cards. but will work with your XFX.. the program doesn't know the difference. it will monitor everything. you can very very easily save 10 profiles.. and set anything to what you want. it's the best and easiest software for Nvidia GPU's for overclocking and adjusting. just click and turn up the fan. that simple. I'd highly highly recommend it.

give her a try

Don't know what kind of case you have, but it's always a good idea to have all the case fan mounts filled up. If it gets too hot you can always remove the side panel.

No!!!:sarc:

do not remove your case cover, its there for a reason.
electrical components attract dust & after a while you wouldn't be able to see your motherboard!!

Well it's not just that, without the side of the case it can mess up the air flow inside and you get a lot more hot air pockets that build up inside where the air flow is no longer removing them, so in some cases it does no good along with what you mentioned.

I disagree. The hot air pockets are created by the fact there are side panels. But I would agree that dust is harmful. Dust is actually minute particles of mineral. It is conductive to static electricity. But allowing your PC components to overheat reduces their lifespan as well as reduces their effective performance. Overheating will cause more harm than dust. The dust can be easily removed. But as I originally stated, adding more fans to the case is the best idea. Removing the side panel is a temporary fix. But even with side panels in place, dust still accumulates and needs to be removed from time to time.

My Computer

hmmm let me think i agree with skunksmash if i remove my side panel i would disrupt my air flow as i have a fan in front which draws air and one on back to remove hot air so removing the side panel would be disastrous plus my gpu would get covered in guff and overheat and crash when i needed it most during a fight with loads of bad guys in crysis or cod 4 and just annoy me. when i could leave it on knowing my gpu is going to be clean and not covered in crap and so is my cpu heat sink safe in the knowledge that my computer is going to run smoothly and that if i have a problem with hardware i know it's NOT cause they are covered in dust and can't run smootly and overheat hence all pc cases designed by people smarter than us put side panels on with space for fans to allow even more cooling options and then some crazy guy went out and invented a wee gadget that attaches to your gpu back to provide further cooling solutions.

just a thought mind!!!

Be very carefull using a vacuum. This creates static electricity much to the dismay of your motherboard.

Ok whatever. Ignorance creates fear and some people are ruled by their emotions. You don't need any help for that. Good luck, you'll probably need it.

just to ad my bit I have a GX2 mounted up inside an Antec 900 case and i have no problems whatsoever.... however with the 900 everything gets a tad dusty but nothing an Air compressor every month or so doesn't solve:geek:
Just bare in mind the GX2 is a monster in size so be sure it will fit in the case that you have or choose.... the Antec 1200 is a good case for the GX2;)

Edit: Dont forget to make sure your PSU can power the GX2... it need some power and also need 1x6pin and1 8 pin to supply the power it needs

here is a list of PSU's that support the GX2 http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_9800gx2_pwr_supply.html
