You might want to try downloading and installing updated drivers for your display card: XPS M1330 Laptop=

Although it would appear that I cannot locate updated drivers there. Perhaps you'll have more luck.

Question: Do you disconnect your desktop monitor before or after turning off the laptop?

i have done it both ways, is one better than the other?

You tell me:D:D (Sorry, couldn't resist)

Do you have any function keys on the laptop that let's you switch between the laptop monitor and the external monitor? If so, try switching back to the laptop monitor and then turning off the external monitor.

What screen resolution is it resetting to BTW?

I just tested it out with a laptop i have here and plugging in the external monitor automatically set the laptops resolution to 1024x768. If I used the function keys to switch to the external monitor and then back again, it reverted back to the 1280x800 resolution. If I just unplugged it it stayed at 1024x768.

What is the native resolution of the external monitor?

1680X1050 is the native resolution of the desktop. . . BTW, it used to work, I have only started having this problem since the last month or so. . .
Thanks for you feedback

You could always update your drivers for the video card. I had a similar problem on a desktop.

Conversely, did you update your drivers about a month ago? An MS update, Dell Update?

Are you using the external monitor only, or in a cloned screen? Normally cloned views default to the lowest native of one of the monitors, but seeing as your desktop is 1680x1050....

Apart from that, I'm fresh out of ideas. Sorry :(

I found a solution for those of us who are having the annoying problem of our screen resolution resetting to a lower resolution when you hibernate, sleep, or restart your computer. . .it seems that it revolves around NVIDIA. Not sure what the exact problem is but unless you are a programmer with Microsoft . . . who cares, as long as it gets fixed. Here is what I did and so far it has completely fixed the problem.
1. Completely uninstall NVIDIA.
2. Restart your computer (you will notice that your resolution stay the same)
3. Go to Dell website (I use a Dell) and download a fresh copy of the NVIDIA drivers
4. Problem fixed!!

This worked on my machine . . .hope it works for everyone else!!!! Share with the world!

Dell modify their Nvidia drivers so be aware that performance/features in other areas may differ from the Nvidia Forceware drivers.

Glad you worked it out though and are happy :)
