Have you tried safe mode?
Have you booted to the bios to ensure it is not hardware related?

it all works fine in safe mode, i thinK it could be a conflict with the on board graphics carn't find anywhere in the bios to disable the on board graphics

It sounds like a driver error.
Uninstall all the software for the device then uninstall the graphics card from the device driver.
When you reboot it will reinstall the graphics card.

Therein lies the problem I think... a conflict with the onboard card and your video card.

What mobo you have that you can't get to disable your onboard card?

Asus is a recognizable Brand, has/makes really good boards, I doubt very much they would make or use a Bios and not give you capabilities of Enableing/Disableing your Onboard Audio and Video since they pretty much know that 99% of the people who buy their boards will toss the onboard audio/video and replace it with a PCI/PCIe card.

If you have your manual, open it up and do some reading, I am sure is there, probably hidden under something else that you don't realize.

I can't say with 100% certainty but I am almost 90% sure there is a way to Disable it.

Being said that, I think that it is clear now that your problem is the conflict with both cards and both different drivers... the more PC gurus here will know more than I do though.

It should disable auto when the new card is installed, the only option you got in the bios is to set the main display as pciex which i have done

Hi throbinson,

Not sure if this is of any significance, but I notice from the specifications of your motherboard that it has an integrated ATI Radeon graphics solution. It could be that the drivers are conflicting with each other. What I would do is to temporarily remove the NVidia card and connect it up using the on-board graphics. Go into the Device Manager and uninstall the graphics driver - see: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/171469-uninstall-device-device-driver.html. When you reboot, you should be using the basic graphics driver as included on the Vista disc. Reinsert your graphics card and repeat the above procedure. Next, download and install the NVidia graphics driver. Here is a link to the current WHQL driver for your card: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x64_180.48_whql.html
