Vista and VGA card

Hi.

I brought a newPC in March this year. My system is

CPUIntel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz 2400 MHz

Graphics CardATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2

BIOSPhoenix Technologies LTD

ChipsetnForce Memory Controller nForce Memory Controller NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller

MotherboardMicrosoft ISATAP Adapter

Network CardMicrosoft Tun Miniport Adapter NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller

OS Vista 32 Homepremium.

I got a Nvidia 8400GS When i got the PC but brought a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 / 1GB / PCI Express 2.0 / Graphics Card. My brother took out the Nvid card and then formated the PC to make sure that all drivers where uninstalled then put the ATI card in. In divice manager under dispaly adapters there is standard VGA Graphics Adapter and further down the page there is "Other Divices" with Video controller. When it installs these some times the standard VGA Graphics Adapter fail but the video controller succeed but with error. saying. "Incompatable display Adapter has been disabled. At least one display adapter on the system has been disabled because its not compatible with the driver for the VGA adapter". lso i carnt change the resolution above 1024X768.

Also my Graphic card is a Sapphier brand but in the windows update its looking for ATI Technologies Inc. - Display - ASUS EAH3870X2 Series

Can anybody help please.

Thanks

Did you install the latest graphics card drivers from ATI's site for your card.

Re: Graphics card/drivers.

BTW my ATI Graphics card is a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 / 1GB / PCI Express 2.0 / Graphics Card

Could the standard graphics card be my on board graphics card and thats getting confused or conflict with the ATI?

Re: Vista and VGA card

What does it say in the device manager about the other devices. Also try and update the driver for that.

Re: Vista and VGA card

In "Other Divices" it says Video Controller and in "Display Adapters" it says standard VGA Graphics Adapter

when i go to properties in Device Manager it gives me this

This device cannot start. (Code 10)
Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available. (But no solution)

Also can you find out what your stanard VGA graphics card is and is there away to turn it of?

Re: Graphics card/drivers.

Hey Skipper,

Let windows update do its thing, it is after all only the driver not the name that is needed and see what happens

Re: Graphics card/drivers.

More than likely, your brother did not uninstall the drivers for the nVidia he removed, so those drivers are still trying to mess with the system.

Use Driver Sweeper to remove all video related drivers and start from scratch. As for letting Windows Update do it - only if you want older drivers - check the ATI site and make sure that the newer drivers don't fix something specific for your card.

EDIT: Added the following:

BTW, please don't post the same issue in multiple forums. As you can see, more than one person has replied, and you'll get conflicting information.
