The difference between cards is the stock core clock and memclock along with the number of stream processors. Stream processors play a huge roll in determining a cards speed. Much more so then core and mem clocks, though you cannot compare cross manufactures such as stream processors on ati compared to nvidia due to different articheture.

Stock 9800GT:
Core Clock - 600Mhz
Memory Clock - 1800Mhz
Stream Processors - 112

Stock 9800GTX
Core Clock - 675Mhz
Memory Clock - 2200Mhz
Stream Processors - 128

Honestly the performance difference isn't to much, though neither is the cost. You should go with a 9800GTX if your inquiry was for a new graphics card, I'd recommend this one:
BFG Tech BFGE98512GTXOCE GeForce 9800 GTX

There's two 9800GTXs, the normal 9800GTX is 65nm and is the earlier one. They re-released the 9800GTX as the GTX+ with a 55nm and the 9800GT is also 55nm. I've been seeing XFX 9800GTX+ going for £130 in a lot of places at the moment.
