Inspiron 531s low profile video card

KFA2 Galaxy GeForce 9600 GT Video Card - 512MB DDR3, PCI Express 2.0, DVI, HDTV, Low Profile 96GFF6VIFCXX at TigerDirect.com
That is the on I've been looking at for a while. I also need a 400W power supply. Can anyone recommend a good 400w power supply that will fit? And if better low profile video card?
Thanks

Well I am definitely getting that card, I know it fits. But I am not sure of the dimensions of the power supply I need, it has to be a minimum of 400W.

Re: Inspiron 531s low profile video card

well your best bet is a corsair or ultra (ultra is cheaper per watts, corsair better brand but less watts for your money) heres a 650 ultra and a 750 cosair
Ultra LSP650 650-Watt Power Supply - ATX, SATA-Ready, SLI-Ready, 135mm Fan at TigerDirect.com
Corsair TX750W 750-Watt Power Supply - ATX, 140mm Fan, SLI-Ready, SATA-Ready CMPSU750TX at TigerDirect.com
there are others but your PSU should be a standard size
but i'm not sure of that you might need to measure it and compare dimensions with these two and see if they are the same

None of those will fit in his case. Here is what his current power supply looks like,

Amazon.com: Bestec TFX0250D5W Power Supply - Dell P/N XW605 for Inspiron 530S & 531S: Electronics

which is a SFX form, a standard ATX power supply will never fit. At the moment the largest SFX size I can find is this 350W Seasonic,

Newegg.com - SeaSonic SS-350SFE 350W SFX12V V3.1 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies

and you can find the dimensions of it here,

Welcome to Seasonic USA

and even then not too sure that it will fit.

Okay, so I need a slim power supply as well. Well, I'll look around. And is it true if I unplug my Hard Drive from the power supply all the storage will be lost?

That is nothing more than a fairy tale. Like to see the link where you got that myth from, or was it from someplace like the FreakSquad (AKA GeekSquad)?

Re: Inspiron 531s low profile video card

There is a very large difference in the power draw between your HD 3450 and the 9600 GT Vista_32bit is looking at. Here's a couple of reviews showing the power consumption of the two,

techPowerUp :: Biostar GeForce 9600 GT 512 MB V9603GT52 Review :: Page 21 / 25

Legit Reviews - ATI Radeon HD 3450 and Radeon HD 3650 Video Cards - Power Consumption and Conclusions

the HD 3450 at full load is only 3W more than the 9600 GT at idle. Somehow I don't think that 250W power supply of his is up to the task.

To get a rough idea as to how much power supply you need go here,

eXtreme Power Supply Calculator Lite v2.5

and enter in all the components in your PC.
