Hey well im buying my graphics card on monday and the 2 cards are pretty much the same price
DCS (Doncaster) Ltd. Online Store
and
DCS (Doncaster) Ltd. Online Store
Sparkle 9800gt or Asus 4830

my computer specs are in the special box in the sig
im pretty much stumped which card i should get, ive heard good things about both
i dont plan on crossfire or sli so that doesnt bother me, the size and heat doesnt bother me, overclocking doesnt bother me either =/

performance wise the 9800GT has the lead, & @ 1680x1050 the 9800 is the clear choice.

EDIT: after sifting through some benches its bloody close......the new ATI drivers are producing great results, this choice is going to have to come down to personal preference between team Green & team Red. b/c they're too close to call performance wise....

well after checking prices it appears the 9800GT is cheaper, add to that the fact that nvidia have GREAT driver support i would go with the 9800....

@ 1440x900 this card will max most new games at very playable frame rates, the 4830 will also give you excellent performance at this res but ATI compatibility issues are well known, & an instant put off (to me anyway)

do you have a preference.?? b/c on paper they're too close to call, the 9800 pulls ahead in some game & the 4830 pulls ahead in others...

Lukepker,

How did the 4830 turn out for you? I have one on order which should be arriving next week. I am going to be using it at high resolutions and wondered what your experience had been with performance, drivers and the like.

You are in luck

I have BOTH cards. I have an Asus 9800 GT in my system and just bought a Saphire 4830 for my friends new system I just built for him. I was curious myself and installed his card in my system to see the difference. I give the edge in performance slightly to the 9800 GT ... but this is because of the drivers. This card has been out longer and the drivers are a little more stable. Had some issues with the ATI card and had to do a little tweaking. The 9800 GT handle the 1080 reso nicely. Have to admit though with the newest ATI drivers installed it's pretty close.

As for software ... Catalyst Control center is great ... much better control and tweaking options in my opinion ... more advanced

Noise, temps, etc ... ATI has the edge ... MUCH smaller card if room is concern. Does NOT get in way of hard drives ... 9800 GT (standard card) will in many mid cases. Decreased temps in case by 5-10 degrees celcius in my case by putting off less heat. Noise ... I couldn't really tell much difference. 9800 might be a tad quieter.

All-in-all ... ATI is so close in performance and saves you a few bucks I would probably lean towards it. The drivers would be my only concern as is really the only bad you hear about the ATI cards ... but as long as you are not hooking the display to a large TV screen ... the current (newest) drivers seemed to work fine on my 22inch HP Monitor with native reso the short time I test it (few days)

My Computer

As BfromSac said, the performance is very close, but the 9800GT still takes the crown. Not only this, but the 9800GT runs cooler and uses less power, plus if you like some of the many games that support NVIDIA PhysX technology, you're going to want to go to NVIDIA.

You have to take into account which card you get as well. I have an Asus 9800GT ... it runs hotter than the Saphire 4830 ... but my HP case is crap and too small so that may contribute.

Like I said I do agree the graphics stand out more to me with the 9800GT ... specifically in overall screen resolution. It is more "plug-and_play". Had to make zero adjusts with in on my 22"high def monitor and slight (easy) adjustments on my 52" Samsung. 4830 needs tweaking. I just looked on Newegg and the price is dropping on the 9800's across the board matching or beating the pricing on the 4830 so it's leaning back to Nvidia for best value.

Curious to see how the 4830 is doing for the ones that went with here. Either one is a good choice

Best of luck

My Computer

My Powercolor 4830 was 90 USD, and I've got a 15 USD rebate to mail in. I may have missed a card but I didn't see any of the 9800GT cards for under 105 or 110 even with rebates. It's also my understanding from reading some of the newegg reviews that there is a new chip on the 9800GT that is significantly different from the one they used to use which was pretty much an 8800GT, and this new chip isn't quite as powerful as the old one.

I have a 7.9/6.0 score in Win 7 without any oc'ing on the WEI and I was able to run 1920x1200 burn in at just over 60fps w/o aa, and played burnout paradise this evening at 1920x1200 at full detail with 8x aa and it was as smooth as silk.

I'm sold on the 4830, I don't have a lick of buyer's remorse. I have nvidia cards in my other computers (albiet older ones) and I've traditionally been quite happy with them, so I don't really see myself as having any bias one way or another. In fact I started out looking at the 9600GT first but since the 9800GT wasn't much more I focused on that, the Radeon only came up when I saw it on a Tom's Hardware review. While I wouldn't fault anyone for buying the 9800GT I will say that from the research I've done they are too close to call in terms of performance and I would buy the 4830 again in a heartbeat.

Can't wait to OC and see what kind of frame rates I can get, the fan is staying pretty low and keeping the GPU nice and cool at stock settings so I think there's some good headroom. :)

Newegg.com - SPARKLE SFPX98GT512D3 GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

I don't know ... maybe I got a special promo from the Egg but I swear I saw one 99$ free shipping and 15$ rebate

But yea I agree you can't go wrong with that card. I am betting that the 4830 will overclock better and keep cooler. I'm not bias either way ... but I agree the 4830 is the better deal right now as I said before until the 9800 come down across the board (which it looks like they are doing ... because of this card no doubt)

My Computer

Pretty close in price there, and if I for some reason didn't get the rebate they'd be right on top of each other.

I went back to look for that G92/G94 core thing I was talking about, turns out it's in reference to GTX cards, not GT's
