I wouldn't get a 9800GTX+ as a GTS250 is just a re-released version of the 9800. Both cards (GTS250 and 4850) are similar in performance, but with the GTS250 being a newer revision of cards, I think it would be the better choice.

i think the GTS250 is the better buy, while this card & the 9800GTX+ look pretty similar on paper, the 250 seems to have the edge, newer revision & its been tweaked for better throughput at higher res.....

& its got a shorter PCB....

the 4850 is also a ''good budget buy'', if you dont mind playing ''driver Russian roulette''

Check the stats of some 9800 & 250 cards. I was considering getting the gts250, but the 9800gtx+ had higher ram, core & shader clocks so i bought that instead.

Re: is the 250gts a good choice?

I currently run a 8800GTS OC 512meg GDDR3 from BFG, would this 4870 be a good upgrade from my current card? I have been reading anywhere and everywhere I can to try and find out because I don't want to waste money on a new card for a 2-4% increase in performance.

This is my exact card: Newegg.com - BFG Tech BFGE88512GTOCE GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

well i went from the same bfg 8800gts 512 to a 9800gtx+, my lowest fps in crysis with the 9800 was double that of the 8800, also runs about 20 degrees cooler. Thats at least the same step from the 8800 to a 4870 id say.

Re: is the 250gts a good choice?

The problem with that benchmark is that it does not show you which units are using what DDR version of ram. I have read a lot of articles indicating that a card with 512Megs of DDR5 will greatly out perform a card with 1gig of DDR3, how accurate is it, who knows!! Opinions are like ******** everyone has one, but its hard to get a subjective opinion on many hardware devices other than benchmarks, but again without complete descriptions of each card its harder for me to pick one.

My logic tells me to pick a card with DDR5 but thats where I get stuck, trying to figure out WHICH card with DDR5 I should get over my current card. I like BFG they have never done me wrong on any of the 3 cards I have owned from them. But I am not blind to change if its going to be a better performing card "example ATi 4870".

Going from an 8800GTS 512, to a 9800GTX+ or GTS250 won't show any considerate improvement. They're all virtually the same card.

And saying "double fps" is quite inaccurate to compare them. That link shows the GTS 512 at 13fps and the 9800GTX+ at 19fps. That's far from double.
