Black screen at startup with NVIDIA driver

Everytime i try and load up Vista i get a black screen. So i reboot in safe mode, uninstall driver and it loads up fine. Windows installs the driver and restart, only to be back at square 1 :(

Have you tried downloading the driver from the Nvidia site rather than allowing Windows Update to do it? This should sort the problem.

Yep, tried that :( Getting really frustrating. As soon as i uninstall the driver in safe mode and reboot it's fine. But says i need to update the driver, cause it's just using the windows driver. So do that and blamo, black screen. :sa:

I don't know what video card your running, I have a 7950GX2 there is a known issue with the newer drivers working with older cards. They don't play well with Vista Aero and the older cards. The result is when booting up all you get is a black screen with a curser as windows loads. There are one of two work arounds for this til Nvidia gets thier act together.

1. Start up with the default windows drivers, once windows is loaded turn off Aero and use the default XP desktop. Then upgrade your drivers to the newest Nvidia driver. With this method you loose some of the bling and functionality that Aero gives you.

2. (recommended) Install the 178.13 drivers. These are the last known good drivers that Nvidia put out that works with older cards and vista with full funtionality. You can find the drivers at the link I'll post below. There really is no need to upgrade the drivers from this version but you can check with nvidia periodicly to see if the issue gets resolved, but keep a copy of these around in case they don't.

is this a new thing? have you just built your rig? are you uninstalling the previous drivers properly first , using a driver cleaner in safemode to properly uninstall? such as driver cleaner or driver sweeper?

When you go to Device Manager, what do you see under Monitors? is your Monitor Name & Model listed or just "Generic PnP Monitor"? if the latter... therein lies your problem.

I was having the same issue and not until I change the monitors driver was that the problem went away.

Also, if you are not installing the GPU driver with "Run as an Administrator", you may get this problem as well.

Does it even show your desktop for a split second before it goes black? I had an issue where because of a malfunctioning full screen game, it changed the order of my monitors (I have 2) and it defaulted to my second display which I nearly always have off unless I watch a movie. So when I would boot up, it showed my desktop for a couple seconds and the signal would go away and my monitor would go into sleep mode. I found out and changed it back using VNC.

Still having no luck even with going to the old drivers GeForce Release 178. I'll check all the cables, but i don't think this will help seeing as it works fine in safe mode and when i uninstall the drivers it boots up fine. I'll keep trying stuff. This is not 100% but, before Vista allows the new video drivers, you need to make your Monitor Vista Compatible and, as you can see... you haven't

Post your Brand, Model monitor and we will try to find x64 drivers for it.

I have an Acer 2216w and had the same fate. I solved my issue by using drivers of an updated Acer model 2219wd if I remember correctly. So far so good and no issues. You may want to do the same but, your miles may vary and you will do it at your own risk... I want to make that sure.

BigMinge, are you 100% sure your native resolution is 1280 x 1024? it seems like a very low res for a 22" LCD monitor.

im not sure why it wouldnt be vista compatable since its a 3 month old machine that came with vista HP dv9930us intel centrino dual core 4gb ram nvidia 2048mb factory card, have tried origional and newest drivers, even checked nvidia site and it says i am running recent version still same problem, thought it might be bad card but i see many others with same situation, so just dont know.......

It's a ViewSonic VX2235wm LCD Display. That's what i run my monitor on. If i go 1680x1050 i get black either side of my wallpaper. So that's why i run it @ 1280x1024

@dearls, I assumed you had the same issue that BigMinge is having, now that I read your post, you are clearly having a different issue and as such, you may very well start a new post so we can help with your problem since, if we were to help you out here, we would be threadjacking BigMidnge post and we don't want that. If I understood your post wrong, I apologize.

BigMinge, I found a driver that it supposed to be for Vista x64, look here... something tells me that this is just a Standard (Generic) driver and not a specific driver though and here's where your problem lies but, lets give it a try anyways.

http://www.viewsonic.com/support/do.../Standard_Monitor_Driver_Signed_Vista_x64.zip

Is the same one you have? if so, try this:

1.- Download Fresh copies of both Nvidia Video Drivers and Monitor Drivers and save them to a Temp Folder. Within that Folder, make a New folder for each file and extract there.

2. Uninstall both the Nvidia driver and Monitor driver you have right now using the Nvidia Driver Sweeper, I would try doing so in SAFE MODE just for good measure.

3. Once you have done this, boot up to Windows again, wait a few secs after you are at your desktop and go to your Device Manager, under Monitors, double click on the "Generic PnP Monitors", click on the Driver Tab and then, click on the "Update Driver", follow instructions but use one of the options that will say something like... "Let me choose the file or driver to install" and it will take you to a pop up where you have to browse for the file. Point it to the extracted subfolder you just created for it and make sure you use the Vista or Vista x64 .INF file and not the XP or X86 file.

4. If everything went according to plan, it may or may not ask you to reboot, if it doesn't ask you, do so anyways and get to the desktop.

5.- Once at the desktop, repeat the process with your Nvidia Drivers... Device Manger/Display Adapters, double click, etc, etc, etc.

Come back and tell us what happened.

Mine says Generic Non-PnP Monitor. And yes i am installing it as "Run as an Administrator" Tried looking for updated drivers for my monitor and it says it has the best available. Still having no luck even with going to the old drivers GeForce Release 178. I'll check all the cables, but i don't think this will help seeing as it works fine in safe mode and when i uninstall the drivers it boots up fine. I'll keep trying stuff. Thanks for the imput guys

Got to the monitors website for the driver. I have a Samsung and went to their site that had a special 64 bit driver for the monitor. I run a 9800GT and do not have the issue you are having.

You may have to do what I did and opt to download a dedicated x64 driver for a newer and different model than the one you have. Again, do so at your own risk as you may damage your monitor.

On the other hand, worse case scenario is that it won't allow you to install it.
