I know someone who is.

He has had no problems so far with doing this other than heat. Those things put out a ridiculous amount of heat, and the cards themselves are big too so they allow less space for heat distribution.

Just something to keep in mind. I wouldn't recommend gaming extensively with 2 4870x2's for too terribly long without giving your PC a cooldown. I'd be afraid they would burn out on me :\

I have a friend who has 3 8800 Ultras in tri-SLI and the amount of heat they put out is just insane.

Results with vary with multi-GPU setups aswell, though heat being the biggest problem. Get some decent cooling in your case and you should be alright with it.

i dont run those cards but i hear 3 way CFX (1x 4870x2 & 1x 4870) scales & performs just as well as the full fat 4 way CFX.....;)

i'd save some cash & go with the 3 way setup ...... but that's me.

I have 2 Sapphire 4870x2 in crossfire mode but I can't play games or run any benchmark, the PC just freezes or reset w/o warning. Windows runs ok but anything related to 3D will hang the PC.
I have Windows Server 2008 64bits, which is pretty similar to Vista 64 (all my drivers are the ones from Vista or native drivers for the server edition). I have a Gygabyte X84T-DQ6 with 8GB RAM.

stoneys-nutz

you said that in your case everything is working fine. What version of the ATI drivers and CCC suite did you install?

I tried with different versions of the driver and CCC but no luck. And after installing-reinstalling many time different drivers now I can't even run the CCC. Eveytime I tried to run it I get the error saying that the version of the display driver is not the correct, even though is the latest one, 9.6

any ideas? any help will be much appreciated.

thxs.

Here is the information you wanted.
When i installed my drivers i used driver sweeper to clean out all my old drivers. (in safe mode). Link below.
Also i used CCleaner to clean my registry. (still in safe mode). Link below.
I put the link in for ATI drivers too.
I hope this helps, do you get an error message when things go wrong, if so put it in a new post and see if anyone can help.

Hi stoneys-nutz,

I just remove one of the cards. So basically what I have now is 1 4870x2. I remove all drivers and I installed the latest ones from ATI (as I did the first time I installed both cards). Now CCC loads ok. The image you just posted looks the same as what CCC tells me now.
I will try 3dMark and some game. One more thing, I'm not running Vista x64 but Windows Server 2008 x64. I'm wondering what would happen if I try Vista with both cards on the system? perhaps it works.

you are running Vista x64, aren't you?

Still, these problems shouldn't arise if ATI had a professional group of Software Engineers so build drivers. NEVER AGAIN ATI for me.

thx.

The reason i went to ATI was because i had two BFG 8800 Ultra's in SLI and had nothing but trouble with them, a lot like your having at the moment, that was on Vista ultimate x64 too, i think it's a mixture of Board/Card/Mem/CPU, put the wrong part in and thats it, problem is, whats the wrong part ?, they should all be compatible with each other, you could try Vista ultimate x64, but there is no guarantee it will be any better, anyway, good luck and keep us posted.

I have a Corsair HX1000 modular. I'm now trying with Vista Ultimate x64 and things are worse. System is very unstable. The installation of the drivers + CCC was fine but everytime I try to run 3DMark or a game the PC freezes with a blank screen.

I did. I running for ~22 hrs. No leaks or errors found. I did this more than a month ago when I got extra 4GB. Everything was working fine before I got the new cards.
Anyway, now I managed to make the work under Vista Ultimate x32 with latest drivers/CCC. But, this means that because the drivers for x64 platforms DON'T work as they should I'm stuck with a x32 systems and 4GB instead of 8Gb. Where should I stick the extra 4GB? don't answer..I know...
I'm sorry but I find this unacceptable from ATI part. If they provide drivers for Vista x64 and even Windows 7 they should test them more because they are definitely not stable under x64.

I will keep testing the cards. So far I managed to run 3DMark without freezes or BSOD. I need to try some games now. Keep you posted.

Conclusion: ATI drivers/CCC under x64 systems with crossfire enabled ARE NOT STABLE (some ppl claim they have managed to make them run...others like me can't)

thanks for the support

I can certainly understand your frustration mate.

But I'm another one running crossfire under both Vistax64 and 7 x64 and have no problems. I've run both 4850 CF and 4890 CF with no dramas, but I haven't tried quadfire.

I have the same PSU. How have you connected the cards? ie the two hard wired 8pin+6pin into card A and the two modular cables into the V1 rail for card B. You aren't mixing the rails by any chance?

How do you have your crossfire bridge attached?

(sorry for the basic questions, but it never hurts to eliminate the simple stuff)

    Samsung Story 2TB USB 3.0

Hi droplet,

Sorry to hear you're having issues under Vista x64. Perhaps you can have a look here to see if you can find a solution to your problem - CATALYST Drivers - Rage3D Discussion Area. Alot of those guys there run a Vista x64 crossfire setup without issue so... ???

I myself have never had an issue with ATI/CCC drivers under Vista x64 myself, but I also don't run a crossfire setup.

At any rate give the site a try; very good info.

Good luck.

I can certainly understand your frustration mate.

But I'm another one running crossfire under both Vistax64 and 7 x64 and have no problems. I've run both 4850 CF and 4890 CF with no dramas, but I haven't tried quadfire.

I have the same PSU. How have you connected the cards? ie the two hard wired 8pin+6pin into card A and the two modular cables into the V1 rail. You aren't mixing the rails by any chance?

Hi smarteyeball,

I doubt it's a power supply problem (mixing rails) because he's able to run in 32-bit mode, but not 64-bit, which does seem to be a driver issue. The question is why???
