Solved Vista x64 does not detect XFX GeForce 9500 GPU

Hello, this is my first post here on this forum and hopefully someone here can offer me a solution, because I'm at at my wits end trying to get this to work. I'll try to list off everything that I've tried.

GPU: XFX GeForce 9500

Gateway LX-6200
Computer Specs:
Windows Vista Home Premium x64
AMD Phenom 9500 Quad Core
8GB Ram
Serial ATA 500GB HD
ATI Radeon HD 3200
500W PSU
(any other info needed, just request)

P.S. Not sure of the MoBo build. It was the original MoBo that came with the computer.

I originally did what I normally do when installing any graphics card; I uninstalled the on-board graphics card drivers and disabled it, then attempted to install the drivers for the new card. While running the installation, an error appeared telling me that it didn't detect any Nvidia compatible hardware in my setup. So I checked my device manager and sure enough, there was only the onboard card showing up in the list. So I tried restarting the computer to see if a reboot would cause it to appear. Nothing happened, so I ran CCleaner and Driver Sweeper to clear any registry and drivers issues that could be occuring. I rebooted, and still nothing appeared. So I went into the BIOS and tried to change some settings in there. I disabled the on-board through the options there, but that only caused the BIOS to give me issues and I couldn't even reach the splash screen, so I reset it and then tried changing the load settings from IGFX-GFXO-GPP-PCI to GFXO-GPP-IGFX-PCI, saved and then rebooted. I got past the splash screen on the new video card but the computer locked up before it would load the OS. So I know that both the card and the PCI-E slot on the MoBo are working fine. But I have run out of ideas as to what to try next to get this to work. Any help would be very appreciated.

with all the things you have tried it may be that difficult to undo all of them. If you need anything on that driave now is the time to backup.

then you can do a system fikle checker by typing cmd in search and then sfc /scannow. see if that works. If it doesn't you should do a repair install.

I assume you have the vista dvd.

Let me know how it turns out

Thank You for the quick response. Unfortunately I can't really say that I do have the Vista DVD, seeing as how the computer is not my own. I'm trying to remedy this problem on my roommates computer which I use a lot, probably more then him. However, he is currently at work and won't be off for awhile. After doing a thorough search of his CD-ROM's and DVD-ROM's I was unable to find a Vista CD or even a repair CD so I don't really know what he actually has. However, I did run the sfc/ scannow and let it try to verify my files. It wasn't able to fix anything due to my lack of having the DVD, but it did create a CBS.log file. I can upload this for you if you think it will help any. I can't make any sense of it, so I assume it can't help much but I thought I'd at least put it out there. Either way, thank you for your suggestions and hopefully my roomie will be able to produce a Vista DVD when he get's home .

[Edit] P.S. On a side note, I forgot to mention in my first post that I did reset my BIOS after trying to disable the on-board graphics, so it has been returned to it's original settings.

There may be a setting in the bios for video that specifies PCI-E or PCI (my ASUS does). Check that. Just curious if you re-enabled the onboard video if your system will still start. Do you have administrative rights?

From my first post:

"...changing the load settings from IGFX-GFXO-GPP-PCI to GFXO-GPP-IGFX-PCI, saved and then rebooted. I got past the splash screen on the new video card but the computer locked up before it would load the OS."

IGFX = Integrated Graphics

GFXO = PCI Express Slot

Probably should of clarfied that in my earlier post. But in answer to your question, yes, I did try to switch the load sequence from regular PCI/On-baord to PCI-E to no avail. And I'm currently posting on the system I'm having trouble with, reseting the BIOS set everything back to normal. And I do have full administrative rights on the computer.

Is the mobo flashed with the latest bios? I do not know the model of the motherboard in this computer other then it is the one that was shipped with it. I did download the most recent drivers for the MoBo from Gateway's support page, but the only info I really have on the MoBo itself is that it uses an AMD 780G Chipset.

SP2?
Oh wow. I didn't even realize that there was an SP2 for Vista 64-bit. I was using XP up until recently. Thank you for pointing this out. I'm downloading it as I type.

Remove all other PCI cards? Yes, there are no other PCI cards installed.

Reseat PCI-E card? Yes, I re-seated it before when I changed the BIOS settings.

Let's just hope that my ignorence and this problem will be put to rest with the SP2 update. Thank you my good sir for pointing that out :)

All conectors attached? You might need a 1 x 6 pin adapter or not for that gpu.

Thank you all for your help, but one of lemur's questions saved the day! Installing the Service Pack 2 allowed Vista to recognize the card and everything is working swell! I can't believe I overlooked there being another SP2 but thank you so much for pointing it out. Consider this thread solved :)

P.S. I repped you lemur for your assistance. Thank you again.
