Laptop using 24" monitor question...

Hi, I didn't know where to put this, so I hope this forum is okay. I have an HP G60 laptop with vista home premium, and I recently bought a 24" monitor, only to come to find out that my laptop doesn't come NEAR to providing enough pixelization to make the 24" monitor run at it's full potential. Is there anything I can do about this to make it run in it's full potential? Thanks!

What exactly do you mean by 'run at it's full potential' ?

Is it:

A) It's not set it to it's native resolution of 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 which either results in a screen with 'borders', or it's outputting at the same res as the laptop which results in a 'fuzzy' picture.

or

B) Games and apps struggle at 1920x1200/1080

If it's A - then it sounds like it's in 'cloned mode' (when plugged into the laptop, the desktop and taskbar appears on both the laptop screen and the 24")

If so, you need to set it to 'Extend the Desktop onto this monitor' to be able to independently configure the resolution.

(right click on the desktop, select personalize > Display Settings )

display settings.JPG

If the monitor came with a disc, make sure you install any drivers for it.

If it's B - then there is not much you can do.

Ok, I don't have it hooked up yet because I am waiting for the keyboard, but when I look at my screen resolution settings, the lap top only goes to 1366x768 pixels, and my 24" monitor needs 1920x1080 to give it the best resolution. When I asked HP before they said changing my graphics card would do it, but they couldn't even tell me how that worked, they said they would email me about it, but they never did. Is there a way I can use the monitor to it's full pixel potential?

You cannot 'change' a netbooks graphics card without replacing the entire mainboard. Luckily you don't have to.

The reason that it is currently maxing out at 1366x768 is because that is the netbook screens max resolution.

If you follow what I mentioned in my first post, you will be able to use the 24" @ 1920x1080

As usual, the HP technical support was completely useless. Smarteyeball is right. As soon as you attach it, it will work. No need to panic.

Well, for a day I was worried! I took it right out of the box, tried to use it, it was all wacked out magnified, wrong colors, all crazy, the installation disk was useless, and the users guide was no help either. I finally called SAMSUNG customer service, and went through three levels of technical support to get to the guy who finally told me all I had to do was Push the FN key, (Which I had NEVER used before), and F4, and PRESTO!!! It's the FULL color resolution!! 1980x1080, and BEAUTIFUL!!!! UNREAL!! Lets see if I can post a pic.... Not a great pic, but WOW, this monitor is BEAUTIFUL!! 24 inches almost seems too big!!

This is a wonderful story. I am glad you are so satisfied with the result. I am trying to talk the wife into getting at least a 20" for her 14" laptop. But she does not want it. Maybe I can convince her when I show your picture.

Yeah, the thing is when your used to a small screen you don't think you need a larger one, and really you don't, but when you GET IT.... that's a different story! The picture is so clear and crisp too! It was too bright, I had to turn the brightness down, but that was easy... It's amazing!!

I cannot work on those laptop screens anyhow. My vision is too bad. I have 22" screens since 2 years - but 24" would be even better. I think Samsung makes good screens. i have HPs.
