    nVidia cards not recognized

    Hi all.
    I have a problem.
Vista 64-bit Home Premium (Service Pack 2, 12 GB RAM, i7 CPU) used to be fully functioning with 2 Nvidia GeForce GTX 285s in SLI configuration, but suddenly they are no longer recognized in Device Manager (are now called either ‘Video controller (VGA compatible)’ or ‘unknown device’).

I have uninstalled them from Device Manager and rebooted, uninstalled the Nvidia drivers from Progams and Features, and reinstalled with latest nVidia drivers, but the cards are not recognized and the machine now has very basic visuals – DVDs jerky, games won’t run etc.

When I use the ‘update driver software’ command in Device Manager I get ‘the driver for your software is up to date’ or ‘windows found driver for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. The parameter is incorrect.’

Possibly linked to this (or the cause of it?) is failed installation of “essential windows update” for nVidia - Display - NVIDIA Geforce GTX 285.
The error code was 80070005 and has just changed to 80070103.

I now know that I should avoid windows updates and from now on I will, but at the moment I’m mystified how to get the nVidia cards recognized.

I don’t have any previous system restore points.

I would really appreciate any advice or suggestions how to solve this problem.

    Many thanks.

    Re: nVidia cards not recognized

    Hello AJBV,
Try this un-installer to get rid of any trace of the old drivers. Do this in safe mode, then reboot.

Guru3D - Driver Sweeper (Setup) download from Guru3D.com

I would go to the NVidia site to download the latest drivers.

    Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

Use option two, do this after you have run the un-installer.
Hope this helps, good luck and post your results.
