Force 1080p output on laptop

Hi, I've got a problem on the laptop for which I have found NO solutions to. The laptop's maximum display limit is 1440x*** I've hooked it up to a 1080p LCD TV screen and would like to output it to 1080p. However, it doesn't let me go further than 1440x resolution on the laptop. Is there any software which can force a custom resolution to the laptop? Also, how would I make it so the screen is only shown on the LCD TV screen, as opposed to the laptop screen? The laptop is a Dell Studio 17 installed with Raedon HD Mobility 3650 if that is any help. I downloaded latest drivers and it makes no difference.

Does Windows Vista recognize the LCD TV Screen? Also I Suspect you are using a HDMI Output Cable?

Many Thanks,
Josh
