Aero dissapeared, slow graphics/WEI = 1.0

Hey everyone, a few weeks ago my laptop's graphics stopped working correctly.
Something that was really bothering me was that Aero dissapeared. A simple reboot didn't work. I'm using a Dell and I have an option on my laptop to do a factory reset (this includes the laptop returns to the state the first time you booted it), I took a back up, did the reset, but the problem persisted.

I checked my WEI, normally my lowest score is 5,1 for memory. But now my scores for Graphics and Gaming Graphics are both 1,0.
My graphics card is an NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX.
I have downloaded the latest drivers from NVIDIA multiple times and done quite some research on the internet, but nothing I find really resembles my problem.

I had a period that the scores went back to normal and Aero returned, but after a Windows Update those went away again.
This is really starting to bother me now because my laptop is getting very slow of this and I can't watch anything on full screen properly anymore.

If someone can, please help me! Feel free to ask for any more information.

Hi jochen1 and welcome to vista forums, it sounds like your graphics drivers are no longer working correctly, but since you've already tried downloading and re-installing the drivers again(unless they were the desktop version) I would look for other things stopping the drivers from loading correctly.

first of all, can I ask you to look at the device manager (right click computer and click on properties, on the left is device manager), on the screen can you navigate to display adapters and see if there is anything with a yellow warning sign in there, if there is then right click and update drivers for the problematic device.

Hey MrNeeds, there was indeed a yellow warning sign, but no new drivers could be found when I tried to update them the way you said.

Hi jochen, thanks for the info, I suspect that you would need the drivers from dell's site for it to work correctly, here is a link to the uk site and the model of your xps, hopefully it will be of some use, just choose the "video" category and look for nvidia driver - 8800m gtx SLI, that should be the correct driver.

Alright, I installed the driver and rebooted my laptop but I don't see any difference and the problems persist. I also found out that when I try to open the NVIDIA-Control Panel in my Control Panel a warning pops up that says that I'm not using any monitors that are connected to an NVIDIA GPU.
+ When I try to refresh my WEI score the scan no longer test the Graphics and Gaming Graphics. I read somewhere that you need a score of at least 3.2 (or something like that) to be able to use Aero, I was wondering if there was any relation between this and my problems.

Sounds like a bit of a coincidence doesn't it? Can you right click your desktop and go to personalise, then click on display settings, can you tell me what is in the drop down menu as the primary display?

I suspect that your monitor may have been uninstalled, which is strange as most dell monitors (built in or other) usually have individual drivers, but the fact of the matter is, the drivers for your monitor are pre-packaged in the drivers you downloaded from dell's website, strange how it hasn't installed though, maybe try and install it while elevated(right click and run as administrator), that may fix the problem.

I guess you were right concerning the problem my monitor might be inunstalled. After following your steps all I get to see is this:

wdfgdf.jpg

It's in Dutch as I am from Belgium but I guess the most of it is clear. (<niet beschikbaar> & n.v.t. both kind of mean "not available".)

I also installed the driver again the way you said but I don't see any changes.

Hey guys, i'm sorry if i'm posting on wrong topic or whatever, cause i don't know exactly what is the problem, i searched for solving problem on many sites, i can't find it.
The other forums are too old, and since you guys talking about graphic probs, i think my video card is working wrong.
It's nvidia GeForce 8400M GS, i did format, installed Vista Ultimate 64bit, and installed all drivers, in manage device window, there are no yellow warning sign, the display adapter shows vid.card is GeForce 8400M GS, seems drivers are all updated, but everything with video is running so slow, movies, games and even photos, video quality is bad than before format. I don't know if it's problem with video card or something, i never reinstalled vista before, i used to use XP and know how to format and install drivers with that, i mean not in this laptop (another computer). Guys can you please help me, maybe it's different problem, i just don't know what to do.
