Monitor closes

Hi

I have a PC running Vista Ultimate and the monitor keeps going blank and the blue ON switch changes to an orange Off/Standby colour, all I have to do to switch it back on is push the sleep button on my keyboard twice, once does nothing that I can tell

This does not happen in any orderly fashion, sometimes it will do it 20 minutes after switching the PC on, sometimes it can take 2 to 10 hours, sometimes more, before it happens.

I have tried the monitor on another PC and it ran three days without issue, I then turned it off and put it back on this PC.

Things I have done to sort this out are.

1) I check that power management control panel is not set to sleep, hibernate or switch off, all being set to Never or off so it does not activate the function.

2) I ran extended Memtest in dos and Windows Memory Diagnostics for several hours and no RAM errors were found.

3) I tested the hard drive in Seatools for dos, extended test and no error were found.

4) I ran the FUR Graphics Card Stress test and no issues were found, I have a 512 Meg nVidia card 3 years old

Does anyone know what else I should do or give an idea of the problem hare.

Any help appreciated.

Regards

Daniel

When you're monitor goes blank, does your system go to sleep? There was a problem in SP1 where, if you put your system to sleep using the keyboard, the system wouldn't wouldn't come out of sleep mode. There was a hotfix but it only applied to SP1. You couldn't have SP2 installed.

I had a very similar problem a few months ago and it turned out the monitor was going bad and, eventually it did. It was a monitor power supply issue and, rather than getting it fixed, I just bought a new monitor. When you connected the monitor to the other system, was it ever cycled on and off?

Hi

I have SP2 installed and the problem did not exist when it was SP1.

I'm not sure what you mean by "When you're monitor goes blank, does your system go to sleep?" but I can tell you that if I am in the middle of typing something and the screen goes blank, if I keep typing the words I type are in the document when I bring the monitor back up. So I guess the answer is no.

When the monitor was on the other system, the PC was turned off each night, after about 16 hours of being on. The monitor was off when the PC was off.

Do you think it could be the keyboard "Sleep" button playing up that is causing the problem?

Cheers

Daniel

Looks to me like the monitor is going.

Have you tried just using the mouse to put it to sleep.

Hello, double check your power settings. Access that in the Control Panel . Make sure they are set to not go to sleep or turn off until it reaches the time limit set .

I suggested that the monitor was going bad since ,when it went blank, what you were typing was still there. That wouldn't happen if the system was in sleep mode. I also don't think that the monitor would ever go to sleep if you're typing or mousing, no matter what the power saving option was.

You questioned if the keyboard sleep button would cause the problem, that's why I asked about using the mouse.

If your power settings are correct, then wither 3 is probably correct that the monitor is going bad, can you try another monitor to doublecheck ?

If it is the monitor going bad then how do you explain that he didn't have this problem when connected to another computer? It is a good idea to test another monitor on it but I think that something is wrong with your graphics. Perhaps it is time to tell us more about your computer.

You have done alot of testing, the fact that the monitor works fine on another computer seems to rule out the monitor, however, are you changing cables out also ? Check the cables , also do you see an error in the Event View program ?

Hi

it seems I have given you all a bum steer here, my wife pointed out to me that the PC I tested the monitor on is unstable and reboots on error every so often, that may be why the monitor seemed to be always on, sorry folks.

wither 3, you were 100% right, it was the monitor, when I tested it on a PC that is used often, but not left to stand alone it went black, IE the monitor is faulty.

Thanks to all for your contributions.

Daniel
