    Computer won't boot - HELP!!!

    Pls help.

    cannot display this video mode
    change computer display input to
    1360x768@60Hz

I had a new video card put in last year and the computer wouldn't boot past this msg above. I took it back twice and eventually they got it booting up but it still would sit on the msg for a sec and then go past it. All was fine until the other day and I tried to turn it on and nothing happened.

I have killed it numerous times and tried to reboot pressing f8 to try to boot into safe mode but I can't get anything. The computer is booting and when I kept pressing the f8 key too many times it was beeping me but I get nothing on the screen.

Could it be the video card has died???

Is there any way I can tell. I'm one of these stupid people who are always going to back-up 2morrow and never do so I'm having a melt-down.

I even tried putting the Windows Vista CD in the drive but nothing seems to work.

The screen is fine as I can switch it over to TV.

    Help PLEEEEEASE anyone

Hello pombonted and welcome to the forums

I'm Tom and I'll be helping you with your problem.

Can you see anything on your screen at all? Does the BIOS show?

First of all, let's do the most important thing and backup your files. Follow this tutorial:

Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer - How-To Geek

Let me know when you've done that and we can move to the next step

    Hi Tom,

There was no bios or nothing b4 just that stupid "cannot display this video mode" msg.

I downloaded Ubuntu and it booted and I have a screen.....yeah!!! The link u sent has changed bc the version is different i.e. old one was V8 and this is V12.04 LTS so the instructions are different to the link. I got to network and pulled the other plugs out as I have a linksys ? and Belkin router to laptop. So it is on MyPC (sort of network) and it says "Unable to Mount location". There is no "details" link so now I'm stuck??? Can't get it to open the c:/ drive

That's very odd that it doesn't display a BIOS screen at all, yet it allows you to boot into a Linux live CD.

Yes, that tutorial is getting quite old now, but I don't know of a more recent version. If I find time, I'll remake the tutorial with 12.04 over summer

Where are you trying to copy the files to? A USB device or a network drive? It's much much easier to do it to a USB device, so I would recommend doing that if you have one that is big enough.

What does it say when you try to open your C:\ drive?

    Hi Tom,

I downloaded the program onto a disc and it's on & running fine but the instructions for the old version don't help me so I don't know how I find the c:/ drive because it only comes up with Leanne-PC Network and then is "unable to mount location". It's obviously not the graphics card bc this program u gave me is working fine. I think it has a lot of problems bc I used to just do a powerdown instead of letting it shutdown properly.

    Hi pombonted,

Okay, thanks for clearing that up for me.

When you've booted into Ubuntu, you should see your taskbar at the top of the screen. Click on Places, this should give you a list of storage media on your computer. I don't know how big your HDD is, but mine is called "139GB File System" (or something like that). Click on that and it should open it up. You're now in the root directory of your hard drive, from here you can navigate to Users>Username and copy the files that you want.

My laptop is dual booted with Windows 7 and Linux, so I'll swap over to Linux. I'm in the middle of a big download at the moment that can't be paused, so it will have to be in an hour or so

I'll be able to take a few screenshots for you when I'm there.
