Hi all,

Here is my problem. I have a laptop running Vista, my desktop is running XP, i want to be able to access files and the printer which is connected to the Xp machine on my vista laptop, but they cannot see each other. I have the file and printer sharing stuff turned on on the laptop. Also I am running AVG on both systems and I have the Windows firewall enabled on both. Both are connected to a D-link router, DESktop is wired, laptop is wireless. Also a friend of mine came over and has the same laptop as me except he is running XP on his and he had no problem seeing my desktop, or accessing its files. Can someone please help, i've tried everything. Thanks.

There is a software patch from microsoft that lets Vista communicate with XP over the Network.
Heres the link:

Network Map in Windows Vista does not display computers that are running Windows XP

Should solve it!

I also found out how to Reset the TCP stack in Vista as follows, if all goes tits up:

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

I've tried all of those things and still nothing. Although it does and has always been showing the other computer as a Windows media player device and through it i can access pictures and music and stuff, but no files.

Can you see each machine with windows firewall off?

You may find that the Vista laptop is set up for WORKGROUP (or something) network name while the XP is set to MSHOME. That may be why your friend's XP can 'see' your XP. Change the default workgroup (if that is the case) in Vista to MSHOME and you will then be able to 'see' your XP ... and others.

both pc's are on the same workgroup, both have sharing enabled, both have stuff shared, I turned off windos firewall on both, I have pretty much tried everything, believe me. I am pretty good around computers but I just cant seem to figure this one out. My XP machine has the LLTD installed, the TCP\IP connections which should be open are open, I just dont know what else to try. Thank you for your suggestions. And also i have pinged the other machine successfully.

Can the Vista machine 'see' the the XP machine?
What about the "Password protected sharing", is that turned off on the Vista machine?

I had a similar problem...

My Vista machine could see the 4 XP boxes on the network... then one day, out of the blue, one of them disappeared.

I eventually got it to reappear in the network window, but when I'd try to open it, it would say network path not found.

I couldn't ping it, it would say something like subnet unreachable (they were all on the same subnet).

I did everything under the sun to fix it and nothing worked. I ripped everything out of there (services, drivers, you name it) and put it all back. Nothing changed on the mystery XP box and the other XP boxes could all still get to it with no problem.

I had to format/reinstall before it worked again.

Have you found a solution for this yet?

My Vista machine was running quite nicely on our home network, even though it couldn't see the other machines as they are running XP and Win2K but for no apparent reason it has decided that it can't access the printers on the desktop any more. It was working fine 2 days ago, then the colour printer disappeared, and today the laser printer is no longer accessible.

I me beginning to HATE Vista!

My Computer

My problem is solved!

It's a real round-about solution but it worked...

I installed Network Magic (the free version at the moment, but I think $29 for the full version to solve these problems when Micro$oft won't is a small price to pay). That enabled me to 'see' the other computers from the Vista machine, although I couldn't access any shared printers. Then, by opening Windows Explorer in Vista I could see the folders on the other systems - they required usernames and passwords to access but that was fine as we have accounts on all our home machines anyway. Then... I looked into the 'printers' folder on the print server and right-clicked on the printer I wanted to access and selected 'sharing'. This allowed me to remotely set sharing properties from the Vista machine, but I still couldn't use it - yet.

Finally, I was now able to use 'add printer' and browse the network for the one(s) I wanted to use as they were now visible, whereas before they weren't. It worked.

There is one patch that needs to be installed on Vista machines that may affect you - KB938979. It has something to do with now being able to access shared printers if user account control is switched off. I don't think that was my problem, as it was already installed on my Vista machine, but doesn't hurt to check anyway.

Happy again (for now!)...

i have the opposite problem, so maybe we can find the solution. i have vista lappy, xp desktop, but i can fileshare and share my broadband both ways, but cant get XP mediaplayer11 to see Vista mediaplayer shares.

Network Map in Windows Vista makes network diagrams of the connections between network devices that can be used to troubleshoot connectivity problems. Network Map uses a discovery protocol called Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) that queries other devices on the network to determine how the network is organized.

Windows Vista includes the software components that implement the LLTD protocol. For other devices on the network to be displayed on the map, they must enable a discovery protocol that can respond to the mapping requests from the Windows Vista-based computer.

The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

Download the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder package now.
