Passwrd problems with vista

I have a new laptop which I would like to connect to the home network via the Netgear WGT624 router. I have installed the Netgear software but it opens then immediately closes down so I tried via the find network facility. Vista found the network but when I enter the password it refuses to accept it as being the wrong number of characters.
Any idea how to force vista to accept the correct password without having to change it on the network to the number of characters vista expects?

Typical microsoft product!

What If you right click on the Netgear software and select "run as administrator"? The account your trying this on should be an adminsitrator account too I would think.
