Vista - Local Only Network Connection

Okay, I've searched everywhere looking for the fix to the "Local Only" network problem. I've had it a couple days and can't find why I can't get through to the internet. I have disabled IPv6 and tried static ip which I don't think works with my router and some registry fixes and cmd commands. I'm connected through Ethernet wire so it's not a wireless thing. I don't know if I should switch back to XP Pro or maybe buy a new network card. Help please.

ISP: Verizon DSL
Modem/Router: Actiontec Wireless DSL Gateway GT704WGV (2 in 1 type thing Modem + Router)
Network Card: ULi PCI Fast Ethernet Controller

The first is if I set my ip static and the second without it. It seems that if I don't set my ip static then it does not find the router and only finds unidentified network while if I set my ip static it does but I don't believe my router works with setting static ip from the computer. I can also see the other computers linked into my router but just can't access the internet making me believe it is something with the compatibility with the router and Vista. Okay here it is, this is all without IPv6.

Hey Chris (I'm assuming your name is Chris from the IP settings...),

Let me be the first to welcome you to Vista X64 forums.

It looks like your router/modem does not have DHCP enabled (or it has a MAC Address filter in place.) Do you know how to edit your router's settings? If not, your ISP may need to do it from their side.

I would like to thank you one hundred ten percent for posting this information from the get-go. It makes our lives so much easier when information is posted in this manner.

It looks like when your computer is set to DHCP/Automatic IP, your router is not giving the PC an IP address. If I'm not mistaken, the 169.254... IP addy is an APIPPA address (Automatic Private IP Address). This address is used by Windows when it is looking for an address but the router it's connected to does not want to give it one.

This either means your router has DHCP disabled, or your router has a "filter" on it baring all but a specific set of MAC Addresses/computer names from connecting to it.

Thanks Viper for your help, DHCP is set on as other computers on my network are getting ips assigned and there is no MAC Filter set on the computer, but there are MAC filters on other computers in the network. Can this be a problem? Or is the router not compatible with Vista? I have gotten through once but it was just random after playing around with the network settings on the computer. Once I restarted though it was back to the "Local Only" thing and never has connect back to the internet yet.

Do you have a firewall on your Vista machine? Can I also assume that you made sure the CAT5 cable you're using is not bad? It may also very well be a network setting in your Vista machine. I will have to wait until tonight to pull up specific settings to look at, if that's the case, though.

No, I have no firewall on my Vista machine that I know of and I have disabled Windows Firewall when I first installed. The cable should be fine unless it went bad in the half hour that I installed Vista from XP, I had no problems in XP. I'm going to look into setting a static ip in my router, then I can see if it is a DHCP problem with Vista as many have problems with. Then I won't have a problem with the router not assigning my ip, right?
