Unable to share files between XP and Vista

Hi,

Ive just installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit on my comp and im having trouble sharing files with another computer that has WinXP 32bit installed.

Ive checked that the workgroup names are the same and that file sharing is enabled, but it wont allow me to access files on my vista machine FROM the winxp machine.

I have no trouble accessing files on the winxp machine from my vista machine, but it wont work the other way around. It gives me an access denied error due to permissions, even though I let it have full control.

Could this be because the 32bit is clashing with the 64 bit? Because I previously have winxp installed on both machines and file sharing was working fine.

Hello Carerragt,

The first thing I'll suggest you check is the firewall. Make sure the firewall on the Vista is either off or set to allow incomming connections.

Re: Unable to share files between XP and Vista

Ive tried turning off the firewall completely but it still wont let me in. I also visited that link in the second post and have done most of the things mentioned there, but Im not sure how to some of them, like turn off ipv6 on the nic.

Anyway, I gave up and installed Network Magic, now everything works fine.... I dont know how or what it did, but I can now share files. But if a simple program was able to fix it, there must be a way you can do it without it too.

Just goes to show its nothing to do with vista/xp or 64bit/32bit... its possible if you know what your doing, but unfortunatly I dont lol :P

Thanks for the help anyway

Re: Unable to share files between XP and Vista

hi, me again.
i poked around a bit more trying to figure out how to get this to work and i got it! so here it is for anyone thats interested lol

it seems that the XP machine uses the "guest" account, and vista by default does not give permission to the guest account, even if u select sharing for "everyone". so basically all you have to do is go to the properties of the folder you want to share, click on the security tab, add "guest", and give it access.

thats it
