can you transfer files between a computer that has xp and a laptop that has vista???

XP desktop and vista box on same network, company laptop is on different group even though on a lan. Xp box is used to update libraries, very quick to pull files from xp to vista box
copying 50gb of data from vista to usb external drive, 45 mins approx, same data over the networks is much less
