Hi,
a recent vista automated update rendured my computer un-bootable:((( cheers microsoft..and as i didnt previously create a backup image, thinking i would be able to repair as with XP, i had to reinstall ...losing 500g(3 years worth) of data:((((..anyway..whine over:(

so i've freshly installed vista...and it wont recognise an internet connection. it says i have a connection..which is local only..diag says it has no or limited connection.

I'm with virgin media...which mean i have a modem..off which runs an ethernet cable. Previously i was able to plug the ethernet cable in and it would automatically recognise the connection...and away.

Ive restarted the modem...left he modem off for 10 second ...and hour.....6 hours. Tried three different cables....tried using a usb connection. With no joy.

If anyone has any ideas i would be gratefull.

Mark,

Welcome to the Vista Forums

There are a couple of possible errors. Try these fixes first, one at a time:

1) Go into network connections, find your Internet connection icon, right-click it and disable it. Re-enable it and see if you can get online.

2) As above, but reboot after disabling, and once your computer comes back on, re-enable.

3) Go into Device Manager, find your network adapter, uninstall it, and reboot the computer. Vista should detect it and hopefully automatically install it again. You may need the driver disk that came with your computer though.

Let us know if any of these help your situation.

regarding the vista updates...i was thinking, unless im willing to go through each of the 39 outstanding updates one by one, i was just gonna turn updates off...i know SP1 works okay...so i may put that back in....are there any downsides? can i turn of the notification that tells me to turn updates on(?!!!)??

many thanks
