Hi there... i can not seam to find any network set up info on this site... I have search the tutorials, (networking. vista networking, file sharing) and everything turns up zero results... so I guess i am not using it correctly.

All i need is some help in how to get file sharing working between xp32 and Vista64. At the moment my Vista system can read and write files on teh xp32 shares... but I get errors when the XP systems try to access the vista64 bix, saying they do not have permition.

Any ideas

(if you have the link ot the networking tutorials on this site I would appreciate you posting thenm as well)

On Vista PC:

This first part is the most common issue i see:
Go to "Network and Sharing Center" and turn off password protected sharing.

Type into the start menu gpedit.msc press enter
Navigate to "Local Computer Policy" -> "Computer Configuration" -> "Windows Settings" -> "Security Settings" -> "Local Policies" -> "Security Options"

Double Click "Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only"

Change to "Disable"

Find the file you wish to share

Right Click -> "Share..." -> "Advanced Sharing..."

Check "Share This Folder"

Add a Share name

Click Permissions

Click on the permissions you wish to share for a home network i suggest "Full control"

Click OK

Click OK

Click Close

Click on the start menu

Right Click "Computer" -> "Properties"

Under "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings"

Click "Change settings"

Click "Change..."

Under workgroup change to MSHOME

Click OK

Click OK

Restart Computer

On XP PC:

Click on the start menu
  1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Computer Name tab and click change button.
Under workgroup change to MSHOME

Restart Computer

When trying to access a share of the vista computer:

"My Network Places" -> View workgroup computers -> (Name of Vista Computer)

For username type a username on vista computer with no password

Leave Password blank

Check remember password

Hope this helps

The computers are on the same workgroup. When yo usay "add permitions" what do i put in there.. i think it is a permitios problem... I have the user added with full control already but no luck? It is teh same user and password on all teh systems at home?

everything was workign fine... but now i can not access the xp32 systems in the vista64 network neighbourhood.

If i enter the IP of the networked computer everything works fine?

How do i enable the network scanning finding thing again?

Do you mean you can't access Vista from XP because "network neighbourhood." doesn't exist in vista.

If this is the case your problem is almost definitely your workgroup,
Please refer to my other post on changing your workgroup.

Also the accessing the shares from "View workgroup computers", first and they should appear in network neighbourhood.

If neither of these work try:
1.Click Start, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes, and click Folder Options to open the Folder Options dialog box.
2.Click the View tab.
3.In the Advanced Settings list, click the Automatically Search for Network Folders and Printers check box.
4.Click OK.

Just to let you know I have several 32/64 bit PC's on my network and that shouldn't have any impact on your connectivity.

My 3 XP SP2, 2 Vista business & 1 vista home premium computers happily coexisted on a network until I installed SP1 on the Vista business machines. Now the XP machines can't see the Vista ones, and the vista ones can't see any others except themselves. Clicking "View full map" on the Vista machines in "Network & Sharing Centre" shows all the computers (after installing the Microsoft patch KB922120 on the XP machines) but "View computers and devices" shows no other computers. I have seen other messages on similar lines, but no answers. The worst aspect of this is that unless resolved every vista machine needs its own printer and then another one is needed for the XP machines. Anyone help? All are in the same workgroup, password requirements are disabled, all the computers happily access the internet through a router linked to the network hub. Installing SP1 on the vista home premium laptop did not upset things, only SP1 on the vista business machines.

I have 3 computers. 2 WinXP 32 and 1 Vista64. The Vista64 computer can see all computers. WinXP32 A computer can see all other computers. Winxp32 B computer can see all other computer but when i try to enter on Vista64 asks for a password. This doesn't happens on winXP32 A computer, here i have free acces to Vista 64 computer.
Whats happening here? why i have free acces from one computer and not from another?
