Network icon doesn't stay animated

I have the network icon in the system tray set to be animated whenever there's network activity. It will animate for a few seconds after I dial in, but afterward, it stops, even though the connection continues to be active. Is this normal behavior?

Hi OmegaWolf747,

Double check to make sure the Services Network Connections, Network List Service, Network Location Awareness, and Network Store Interface Service are set to Started and Automatic. For how, see:

How to Disable or Enable Vista Services with an Advice Guide

These are responsible for making sure that the Network icon displays properly.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I checked. The only one that was manual was Network Connections. I have now set it to Automatic. All of them are already started.

Good call Steven, but I tested it in the Windows Classic color scheme on my system and the Network icon animation still works without Windows Aero running.

Omega, you might try restarting the computer to see if that might clear the problem.

I use Windows Classic exclusively. I will reboot the computer later on and report back with the results.

I know this is considered bumping, but if I just edit the reply, the thread won't go back to the top, so...

I rebooted and the icon still doesn't animate for more than a few seconds after I establish a connection. I did some online research and found that the icon will blink for LAN connections, but not for dialup. Pretty stupid, huh?

Omega,

Huh, I never knew that for dial-up. Thank you for sharing what you found on this.
