Ad-Hoc Vista Synchronizations

I searched all the threads and couldn't find this issue -- so I decided to post here!

I have two laptops running Windows Vista Home Premium (with Service Pack 1 and all of the patches). One laptop is an OEM Hewlett-Packard and the other is an OEM Toshiba. I want to be able to set up a synchronization program that will allow me to keep the data on both machines current. Let me give a clear example:

1. I create a document called "Vista Forums are great.txt" on my HP laptop.
2. I want to run a sync program on EITHER laptop that will sync (copy) the same document across both computers. Such that, moments later, after synchronization, I can take the Toshiba laptop and make edits to this document... and vice-versa.

What is the best way to do this? (Note: there is no server, only the two laptops. Both have wireless capabilities.)

Also, can I do without a synchronization program and use something even simpler like dragging and dropping?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Ad-Hoc Vista Synchronizations

Hi btraviswright and welcome to Vista forums

Do you have many folders to synchronize or just a particular one?

Re: Ad-Hoc Vista Synchronizations

Thanks!

Just one folder -- but it contains hundreds of subfolders.

Re: Ad-Hoc Vista Synchronizations

Great, one good solution (it is the one i use for my pics folders, many folders representing more than 20 years of family photos)
I use freecommander (freeware), which is a substitute of the windows explorer and it includes a sync option which is great.
Have a look there: FreeCommander - freeware file manager

Re: Ad-Hoc Vista Synchronizations

Sid,

Good stuff! I was going to use FileSync from fileware.com but I like yours better.

Now, what's the best way to network these two computers? It's my understanding that AdHoc networks, at least in Vista, are only temporary such that when you shut down all the computers in the AdHoc network, and upon reboot, you will have to start a new AdHoc network. (Sorry for the run-on sentence!)

Re: Ad-Hoc Vista Synchronizations

The best way to do it is to setup a network between the 2 computers, of course it depends of your installation.
How is configure your access to the net? via a router?
Are they both wireless....? Please give some infos.

Re: Ad-Hoc Vista Synchronizations

Sorry! Thought you could read my mind!

Both laptops have built-in wireless capabilities; however, one of the laptops has not only built-in wireless but only a USB Verizon Wireless broadband modem. It is not a requirement (although it would be nice) for both machines to share that connection.

No router, hub, switch, or anything else. Also, distance isn't too big of an issue -- most of the time, the two laptops will be on the same desk.

Did I answer everything or did I miss any important details? Thanks a bunch!

Re: Ad-Hoc Vista Synchronizations

It is clear.
Well at no cost a ad-hoc connection would work fine, the laptop connected to the modem could share its net connection and the second laptop can be anywhere within the wifi aera.
If you have any problem to setup the "ad-hoc network", just popin
